I'm working on an old friend's Jeep that he took to college back in the 60's and 70's. A few years back, he had some work done on it by some monkeys down the road. So as I got it, it didn't run, gas tank (replacement plastic) had 2 gallons of water, rust and was mounted on the passenger's side with the neck sticking out the door cutout. I have most of that fixed now, but...

The real problem is that they had cut the seat frame and moved the drivers seat to the right and back to gain a bit more leg room. I have welded the frame back, but the seats just seem to be way to close to the front. By the time I take the 12" steering wheel off and mount the replacement original, I'm not sure he'll be able to easily get in and out. Any ideas?

Are these factory seats? Are you sure the seat brackets place the seat in the original position? A wheelhouse notch is a common modification to move the seat back for more room. This was discussed recently and a search may turn up more information on it.
Knowing what year and model of Jeep is helpful also.

Welcome "George" ... hows the rest of the Gang?

Your seat issue may just be the way it is. Have you tried any other jeeps on for size, to compare?

Tell him to put in tilt steering. This solution may sound like putting out a candle with a hammer, but I had the same problem on my Jeep with different seats on the original frames. I am a big guy (my second cousin was Merlin Olsen) and the compartment was pretty tight for me. Putting in tilt with Saginaw took care of a whole slew of problems. The tilt came out of a GM compact. Besides, if he is paying you, you might make a few more rubles out of the deal.

Since your Jeep has already been modified, pictures would really be helpful...

Barney has junkyard seats on original frames in the original mount holes, and no sliders on the seats. At 6 feet, it sure is tight, if i had a gut it would rub the steering wheels. Seating position is straight up and pedaling feels like stamping out a campfire. Its great!
