If you're going into Autozone or O'Reilly, they'll be back with all the engine bling bling. Hanging there on the shelf with all the valve covers, and carb gaskets, and carb spacers, and other shiny things to bolt onto your engine.

Sounds like it's running lean, Maybe take the intake out again and use silicone, I used the dry felpro gaskets.

Looks like it ran better before I messed with the intake gasket.

Wouldn't a cracked exhaust manifold or bad gasket cause backfiring through the carb?

Vacuum ran 20 with a small bounce before the intake gasket was replaced. I can get it to 18 max after. I took the manifold out again. Feel pro said put them in dry so I did. After taking it apart, every intake hole had oil coming in from the bottom of the gasket. Water jackets held up. Nothing would have held up dry. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe these pictues will work.Camera Roll items 3-5-2016

I cleared all the carbon off ad its backed to clogged for the passages that warm up the carb. Any issues with leaving them clogged at the intake gasket and the intake? It was a pain cleaning that out last time...

Autozone refunded the felpro intake manifold gaskets, I ordered the Victor brand. Since I'm waiting on the new part, I pulled all the brand new platinum plugs. Number 6 was shot already. Oil soaked... I took the fan off and turned the engine over, watching the hydraulic lifters move up and down. Two of the passenger side are not moving by plug 6 and 4. Drivers side all move fine. Took the passenger valve cover off and found nothing broke. What kind of work am I looking at here. Stuck valves or a rebuild? Also, has anyone bought a rebuilt engine? This is a toy for me, no hurry, just want it running right. I could try and fix it, worse case buy a rebuilt 225? Thoughts?

On a 225 the biggest wear parts are usually the cam and lifters do to the often times no oil pressure at hot idle. Very common for a Jeep that has seen a lot of trail riding at idle speeds to have wasted cam lobes. Almost a given on most original 225s that I get these days. If you were to rotate the engine by hand with the intake off, you will probably see flat lobes on the cam.

Daryl, That is exactly what I am seeing now. I guess it's time for a complete rebuild!

angel I am afraid daryl is correct. pull valve cover and you will see a lifter not lifting to its full height. I had the same misfortune with my 225. it took a while to figure out, first thought it was a bent pushrod, then a bent valve, but it was a cam lobe worn from lack of oil. put in an isky cam and she purred like a kitten. no need for complete rebuild, however I would suggest a cloyes true roller timing chain... don't forget oil slinger when reassembling! good luck.

I called around and found a local shop to do a full rebuild for 1600. I only have an engine lift and never been that deep in an engine. I thought about doing it myself, but i don't know what else could be wrong. This rebuild is oil pan to valve covers, installed. Drop in the finishing touches and away we go! All this work was to get it running right. Tranny, transfer case, front differential pinion bearing and ross box are all leaking. Perfect time to get em done, resurface the flywheel with a new clutch kit. This will finish her up and i should have a reliable toy for years to come. When i bought the jeep is was trashed, I've dove all the work so far and its been a fun toy. Thanks to you guys for all the great post!
