Roll Bar placement

do you put your right foot in then hop up . maybe holding steering wheel

 

My front hoop follows the angle of the windshield down to the dash, follows that angle to just under the dash, and then angles forward again so when you get down the the floor panel, the bar is just about even with the door opening. Forward of that hole shown in the door framing.

 

As a tall guy 6'1"" 230, to me getting in is not the issue, it's getting out since I can't rotate my hip with the fixed steering column. So I have to reverse the process by left foot out and then slide back out. And when top on, I have to also remember to duck my head. How the hell the GIs did it with regulatity I don't know. I guess younger.

X2, same for me. And those days when your back is a bit out sure is entertainment for bystanders...

 

Something to consider, are you planning on putting a Bimini on it? Can't spell that word. Will it interfere with your top? You get it in the right spot you can use three point seat belts off it. I don't have one, and been thinking about it lately. Good Luck where ever you put it.

 

The outside header bar makes a good grip hold for leveraging yourself outa the JEEP. A set of repro steps, or nerfbar steps also helps a great deal.

 

That is the roll bar that I have for my flattie. It was mounted well forward, but to the rear of the front loop pockets. Mind that you may be using it to anchor the top of your 3 point seat belt - if so, you will need to fool around a bit to get it correct.

 

On the standard factory ones I see using the angle iron for the base, are they mounted just to the wheel wells or are they bolted to the side of fender or both?

 

Both.

 

Mine is mounted 7 1/4" back from the front edge of the wheel well seat. Which is about 7 1/8th" to the rear of the soft-top socket. Puts the top bar behind your head in a high-back seat.

Ok, don't mind the crusty roll bar pic's, lol! Haven't got to any interior work yet, soon though!

Mounts only onto the wheel well tub.

Here's underneath. I will place a gusset along to connect all the fasteners to help spread the load.

The front connection is also just fastened to the floor pan. The tub channels underneath are very close so I may not be able to get a gusset to strengthen this connection. All in all, even with a non frame mounted roll bar, this will definitely give added protection in the event of a roll over.

 

Don't just use a regular flat washer under the nut, though. Either make a long plate that is a 1/4 " or so smaller or larger than the plate of the rollbar, or bigger body washers with the right size hole in them to go under the nuts. That will minimize the body flexing from making the role bar plate acting like a metal cutter. Same thing with the plates for the bars in the front that go down to the floor in front of the door opening.
