I am not very familiar with the scout stuff. You will have to do a little research to see what works, but I believe that the scout knuckles use 8 studs to hold on the spindle and the gm uses 6. So switching to a GM flattop knuckle you, will have to use GM spindle and I doubt that the IH outers will work. There might be a chance that a jeep dana 30 spindle could work, as the hub design is similar to IH. But that is a shot in the dark.

I have heard that there are a couple models of IH 44 knuckles that are machinable for high steer, but they might be hard to find.

Are you moving the inner Cs to solve the castor problem with scout axles?

I located locally a 67-72 K20 front D44 with disc brakes. Completely rebuilt, so yes, i plan a cut and turn to add 7 degrees of caster on the IH housing, then swap the chevy parts over reusing the IH/Ford rotors....

you are correct, i was thinking of my rear diff, the front is a 1980

if axles are proprietary to Ford/Scout on my diff, does this mean i have to change axles when i convert to Chevy truck from the steering arm out?

Changing the knuckle won't cause you to change the axle outer. Changing anything from the knuckle out (i.e., the spindle, hubs, brakes, lockouts) could call for different outer shafts. The difference between the Chevy and Ford spindle is something like a 1/2 inch in length, so the outers are about a 1/2" different. People sometimes make them work when swapping, but it isn't ideal. Best to use the outer shafts that matches the spindle, hub and lockout setup that you use.

thx Jonah as well...... so, i can just use the Chevy outer shafts with new u-joints, mated to my existing inners?

I am also planning to re-use the Ford/IH spindle, so that I can retain the original rotor(s) so that I can keep the 5-5.5 bolt pattern.. but I assume (hehehehe that word) the original spindles are 8-bolt to match the original steering arms huh?

So this leads me to my next question, where i would find a 6-bolt spindle that is large enough to machine a 5-5.5 lug pattern

I think you want gm knuckle, gm small bearing spindle, gm brakes, ford internal locking hub and lockouts. I doubt the IH auto locking hubs will work but I am not familiar with them. You will be using the Chevy outer with the scout inner. They should use the same ujoint, but like I said, I am not familiar with the scout stuff. Most 44s take the same ujoint. But there are exceptions.

on a d30 I ran early jeep inners and ford d30 outers with the small joints and that combo worked perfect for internal spline hubs

The Ford spindle won't fit on the gm knuckle. The GM Small bearing spindle will fit the Ford hub. The gm spindle is a touch longer than the Ford so you should use the longer gm stub that should fit to the inner axle shafts from the scout.

Grateful for the knowledge, i shall take lots of pics of the changeover..... I havent got the GM diff yet, but the owner says it is a 67-72 K10 D44 with disc brakes, and has internal lockers installed

If it's a K-20 axle the brake parts won't work, 8 lug 3/4 ton stuff. The IH Scout and Ford rotors are completely different and not interchangeable. The only thing the same is the lug bolt pattern.

The Ford and IH spindles are completely different. The last question has me scratching my head trying to figure out what you are asking as you don't machine a 5 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern into the spindle. Maybe a terminology mixup? or a misunderstanding of what parts are do what?

just on a follow up note, if anyone is converting a rear Scout D44 (mine is a 1971), you will need a 1/4" axle spacer after you remove the drum backing plate, and, if you plan to keep the 5-5 1/2" bolt pattern, a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 2-wheel drive rear rotor is a drop in, however on my axle, instead if the 1/4" spacer alone, i made caliper brackets/spacers from a single cut for each side, and pressed a 1/4" offset into the upper part of the bracket to accept GM metric calipers with built in parking brakes. This instead of a welded bracket....... and finally, i pressed out the original wheel studs, and installed 2 1/4" long studs.....

For converting the front with internal lock (scout and cj use external lock) you need exactly those part

1973-77 chevy small bearing spindle (jeep fsj 73-76 are the same)
You need the outer axle shaft from the chevy 73-77
Hub/disq brake assembly from any ford 1978-91
    Bearing for ford 78-91
Gm caliper and hold off plate
Any internal 19 spline lock will work

You can use the scout knukkle, just need to drill 4 hole for the 6 hole spindle patern or you can use the chevy knukkle.

For axle, inner is scout, outer is the 19 spline shaft from chevy, they share the same u-joint.

As for the castor, all scout axle come with a zero degree, jeep need a 7 degree, so you will need to grind down the weld on the " C " and move them to the correct angle. When i did mine, i dont bother with an angle finder, i built the whole set-up with the possibility to move the " c ". When i finished the set-up i tow the jeep on a trailer to an align shop and they set the caster where i want an tack welded it, so i can finish the job home. I have 0.2 degree difference from left to right.

I'm doing the conversion pretty soon and i will take some picture.

On this picture, on left is the 27 spline outer for cj/scout axle and left is the 19 spline axle shaft from the chevy
