T-90 bent shifter?

bought a rolling chassis but the seller had no idea what year it is. I think its a 70-71 but not sure. It has a 4 banger, and what I would assume a T-90 BUT the top of the shift lever has a small "bend or Kink" in it like the t-86 usually has (at least all I have ever been around) the jeep has a single T-case shifter with bracket on the mounting bolt, a flanged, offset 44 rear, etc. Any thoughts? The engine is locked up, but the frame is excellent shape. He had started a project and then lost interest and sold it.

So, does anyone have a good guess on tranny? I have not went looking for casting numbers yet

Any guess on the year with the things I have described? The rear end makes me think 70-71. My old racer had a flanged, offset 44 and it was a 70

AFAIK the F134 got the T-90 up to the end of domestic production in 1971. The only alternative is the T-98 four-speed.

 

Well I went to looking and removing grime and found the casting numbers T90A-1. Still never remember seeing a handle like this on one. Maybe bent like that to clear a bench seat? Not sure

 

PO mod is possible. Bending a shift stalk can be done easily with a torch.

You are correct about the rear axle. Changed in mid 1970. If you got the chassis cheap, that axle makes it a bargain. Only downside with the flanged 44 is Jeep stopped offering the PowerLock, so it's a TracLock if a LSD.

That looks just like the T90C in my '67.

 

Also, I would not rule out a T-90C based on the casting number. Yep - Novak says it's a T-90C. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/manual/t90/

 

I seem to recall the T86 had a different bend, closer to the top.

 

I think you may find water in transmission . being its been out side in weather . maybe why engine is locked too. a frame with all that I see there . would be worth bring home if the price was right . and you could use some of parts . and sell the rest

 

Yep...also the lack of the diagonal frame braces where the rear tank mounts.
I agree with the post about water in the trans, but the real axle and rear drawbar are very desirable even if the trans us a bucket of rust.

 

I had a 1971 with a 134 and a T90 that had that same shifter

 

Another indicator of later year Early CJ is the single lever TC. They only did that in the '70 and '71, didn't they?

 

Diagonal frame member being missing could be because there was a trencher or welldigger mounted in the back. How heavy duty are the rear springs?

 

All V6 CJ's had the single lever tcase, but I'm not sure about the 4 banger.
The diagonal frame braces were deleted with the start of the rear gas tank.
