I'd like to add a winch to my '70 CJ5. I fashioned a winch plate from a Harbor Freight winch plate by cutting off the overhanging ends and welding them back on at a 90 degree angle. The upside down U-shaped plate fits over the frame rails and can be bolted to the sides. Unfortunately, the fairlead interferes with the straight chrome front bumper on the jeep. Searching the usual places for a winch bumper for a '70 CJ5 typically brings up a list of bumpers, but when I select any individual bumper, the description says it'll fit '76 and up CJ's. Does anyone know if a '76 bumper will work on a '70 CJ5?

Pict of the winch plate temporarily in place:

Warn- "PN 13910 '86 & Prior CJ, Scrambler ". Also make a mount for the 8274 winch. I'd make a quick call to them via telephone and they should let you know. Their customer service has been great for me in the past.

    * edit - just realized that is for a mount not a bumper

I contacted Warn about their PN 61859 CJ-5 bumper. They responded, "We have that bumper listed as fitting 1976 – 1986 Cj’s only. Unfortunately we do not have a listing for anything pre 1976." So... the question still stands.

I would think the standard OEM style jeep cj/yj bumper would work just fine - they pretty much never changed. Got mine from a scrapyard for cheap. When it comes to the aftermarket, most companies don't reference much for pre 76 jeeps, but I think any front bumper for a CJ will fit any other one. That is not necessarily the case for rear bumpers and of course other parts, but I think you can do it with front bumpers. Other can/will correct me if I am wrong.

The frame rails are the same distance apart...............but the Mounting and hole location for the later Jeep 76 and up bumper are different. If you can fab brackets it will fit.............if not the early Jeep CJ Warn bumper for your Jeep looked like this:[IMG]

I went with a bumper from TheDirtWorx for my 70. He added a winch plate for me and I am very happy with his work. He makes them for both pre-76 and 76+. image.jpeg

I have a PTO winch but my '71 came with a Runck style front bumper. I don't know if it was a real Runck or knock off, there were no id tags on it.

My Ramsey PTO winch is mounted on L-brackets that are bolted/welded (yes, both) to the frame between the rails, and the fair lead is on another bracket on the stock C-channel bumper.

I'm going to start over and fabricate a winch mount that sits forward like this so the front of the mount is even with the front of the bumper. Thanks for the picture!

Just curious, I see lots of winches, but just exactly how often are they really used?

Before I moved, I used mine all the time. Heck, I'd come up with reasons just to use it. I used it in the shop to drag things across the floor sometimes, just because I had it, and the forklift was out of fuel, and I didn't feel like going and refilling the propane cylinder.

Good question!.........I guess for some folks a Winch is there for looks , or to pull out the occasional dead shrub or tree and I guess even a dead Fork lift as mentioned aboveo_O........is fair game!
Hey! I'm OK with all that..........

But for all you new Winch owners that intend to take that Jeep off road sometime , ya better unwind that pretty Silver cable and figure out how to use that equipment in a real hurry. And don't forget to get familiar with all the other recovery equipment you will also need when hanging off that side hill.

How often are they really used he asks? .............Depends on how often the Jeep is really used.

This is what Winches do for a living...............Save your butt!

Sort of hard to say. both of my Jeeps came with winches and I didn't buy them because of the winches. An old Warn M6000 and a Koenig PTO. In the past both were used fairly well when we used to go out every weekend.
I go out once in a while to exercise them and to be sure they are both useable. A few friends bought new jeeps and one of the first things they did was to put a winch and winch bumper on I doubt if either has been used.

    I had to chuckle.

Lots in that one to unpack on winches vs wenches ... gotta ... let ... it ... go.

Too early for mead, will go see if I can roust mine for some coffee, er, I'd better make it myself... and never speak of wenches in this household lest I be unfit for the doghaus and prepared to duck from a flying frying pan. Second thoughts... reference might only work if we were dressed and heading to an Octoberfest social gathering...

    back under my rock...
