Uhh...really depends on what you mean by "off-road". For general trail use and rocks you can go along way in a 4 cyl. Jeep - it's more about gearing than displacement. HP just means you break stuff quicker.

But if sand is your thing...then sure..add all the HP you want..;)

Esslinger built a 2300cc Ford to over 500hp. How much power do you want? :?

Lots of Jeeps came from the fact with 4 bangers in them.
    Run what you have.

It can be done but requires som special tools to make it relatively easy. I just changed the gears in my front axle and it was easier than I thought it would be by a long shot, but without the tools you would have to be exceptionally lucky to get it done right without tearing it apart 8-10 times.
You need a hydraulic press and a bearing seperating press and a means of setting the height of the pinion, you can do this with the known machined housing depth (I have a sheet with quite a few of them on it) and a 1-2" micrometer to measure the pinion height and a drop indicator and magnetic base to measure the ring gear back lash and some marking compound to check the the tooth pattern. If these tools are available to you it is about a 2 hour project to set the gears by themselves in a bare housing.

The thing to look at with a Jeep engine swap is torque, not horsepower. Jeeps spend almost all their time in the lower 50% of their RPM range, and peak HP is only achieved in the last 20% of the engine's RPM range, regardless of engine. While I agree that a 'different' engine swap with a turbo motor would be cool to see, the short stroke and low torque of that little 2.2 turbo motor would be a pretty poor match for a Jeep IMHO.

Keep in mind that the L- and F- head engines had a fairly long stroke compared to their cylinder bore size, and used really heavy flywheels to optimize its low-rpm abilities. Likewise with the monsterous 50-lb. flywheel in the V6 Jeep.

Now, if you were to swap in a tera-low gearset into the transfercase and use 5.38 gears in the diffs, you would have a setup that gets the 2.2 up into the powerband fairly quickly. Of course then you'd have 25MPH as your top speed with the engine hanging its tongue out...

my dad and i put a pinto 2.3 in his 48 flatfender, we contacted novak and worked with him on a few diffrenet adapter ideas to go along with the T-18 in the willys, but i think novak lost intrest and we built our own, was'nt to hard just alot messuring.

i like the motor and the power it puts out but he wheels maine and theres alot of mud getting cought in the timing belt ( external ) so for me its a huge turn off, but if its just going to be a rockcrawler then i think it an ideal swap and it fits real clean and neat, jason.
