Front piñon nut....can't get it loose

trying to get this nut loose and she won't give. I've got the yoke stabilized so it won't turn but even with an impact wrench with 1 and 1/8 socket she won't budge. Sprayed with wd 40 last night. Ideas?

 

Ok. There is some type of lock washer on that I have to remove first. It's tapered toward the end and has 4-5 slots cut in the sides. See photo. She won't let loose either.

 

That's not a lockwasher, it's what is called a castellated nut.
Hit it with a real solvent like PB Blaster, and put some heat to if it still won't budge.

 

Soak it for a couple of days. As mentioned. a little heat will help. I don't have a torch so, I use a propane torch. That's usually enough. A good home made penetrant I learned about here: 50-50 mix of ATF and acetone. Shake well each time you go to use it. This has loosened up bolts that I thought I had no chance of ever getting off.

 

Make sure there isn't a cotter pin hidden in the grunge.

 

I used a breaker bar and cheater pipe, thwen pumped up a floor jack underthe end of the cheater. Be sure all of the cotter is completely removed.

 

I was in your same boat a few weeks ago. If you have your axle removed. Just bring it to your local tire place. They were able to get mine off easily after my failed attempts with my impact. If it is still mounted up then buy a bigger impact. You can pick one up at harbor freight.

I worked on mine for days before bringing it to a shop. They will probably do it for free.

 

I have one that I can't get off as well. 3 foot pipe wrench on the yoke and 3/4 breaker bar and 5 feet of pipe won't take it off. It laughed at the impact gun.

Is it 1 3/16" socket? I slightly rounded mine trying to use a 12 point. I'll get a 6 point but not sure if that's the right size.

 

Looks like that to me too Glenn. they are called a "Marsden locking nut".
