62 Cj5. F134. New carb from quarter ton parts. All replaceable small parts ignition components have been replaced. Mech advance in good working order. Jeep idles fine but in 1st gear 2wd it is gutless. Any gear in 2wd it falls on its face. However, in 4wd it runs alot better and pulls hills fine. Only driven in pastures and on trails, not street driven at all. Seems to be a timing issue. There is a small amount of slop in the distributor shaft/housing bearings. Could this be the problem? Also sounds like it misses quite a bit but it gets around pretty good in 4wd. Could the timing gears be off a tooth? Would it run if they were off a tooth?

    Thanks in advance

If timing gears were off, it would be when they were installed.

If the distributor shaft is sloppy, it means the point gap and dwell will randomly vary, which in turn means the timing will wander. Have you checked with dwell meter and strobe?

Bad points or wrong gap can give a lack of power. Good idle but lack of power can also sometimes be a vacuum (intake) leak.. new gasket under carb, for example.

Don't see why 4wd would make it better though. What else is different about how you drive in 4wd? (e.g. is it in low range insted of hi?)

To bolster what PeteL said, the slop is normally in a worn distributor shaft bushing in the housing. If you can wiggle the top of the shaft any appreciable distance in any direction, the distributor needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

How much is a small amount of slop? Assuming you set the points to .020, can you wiggle the distributor shaft and increase that gap? If so how much? To me it sounds more like the timing is retarded. Do you have it set at 5 degrees BTDC? I suggest trying to advance it towards 10 BTDC and see what that does for performance. Maybe it is off a tooth as you have asked.

So you're only getting 65hp instead of the usual 75hp?
Can't see any connection between 2wd or 4wd other than lower gearing thru low range.

Did you run a compression check. It might reveal a some info like a blown head gasket?

4low is when it actually runs decent. Must have something to do with multiplying the torque. The jeep is 20 min away so I can't just run out and check stuff. The slop in the distributor shaft is excessive. Lots of side to side movement. Ive ordered the replacement electronic distributor from walcks. I will let yall know if this fixes it.
Feels like im getting 4hp instead of 75hp.

Where can I purchase the distributor shaft bushing? So I can rebuild the stock unit to have as a backup if the electronic unit goes out?

Installing new bushings in the dist housing is not much of a problem but unless you have or have access to a machine shop your efforts will be futile because you have to line bore the bushings.

New distributor from walcks is installed. Runs like a champ. All 75 horses up and running.
