My new back up switch is either manefactuted wrong or the reverse shifting tod is position wrong. Because when the car is neutral the back up lights are on and the opposite when its in reverse. So should the shifting rod be engaged or disengaged in reverse. 1980 cj5

    Moved to more appropriate forum.

    What transmission do you have?
Most of these type of switches close when the ball/button is pushed in so they should close when in reverse completing the circuit. Did you check to see if the switch is closed when in reverse at the switch?

You sure you have it in the right hole. That is acting more like a neutral safety switch.

The switch is the right kind...? Normal Open, or Normal Closed are both 'things.' They may look identical.
Do the lights stay on in all the forward gears too, or just neutral?
