You checked to make sure the tcase didn't pop into neutral?

Lock the hubs, put it in 4wd and see if it will move. If it moves that would tell you it's most likely the rear end. Other possibles, center spun out of the clutch disc, broken mainshaft in tranny. Most of these would make a lot of noise when they go. Double check your t-case shift linkage to make sure it's in gear. A '70 would have the single stick shifter and they can get out of adjustment and cause problems with staying in gear.

Thanks ! It didn't make any noise so hopefully it's not that. I tried shifting through the transfer case gears and got nothing.

Were there any other symptoms or did anything seem at all strange before this happened?

Well, like was mentioned, lock in the front hubs, put it in 4wd and see if it moves.
Give us more details on the rig... tranny, tcase, axles, engine, mods, etc etc

With the engine running and the clutch pedal out, can you easily shift the tranny through the gears including reverse?

Try this first. Check transfer case linkage second. Barring these things, and if clutch feels normal, splines on input shaft or disc may have given up the ghost, or possibly torque damper hub came loose from disc. I'd pop top of trans and roll it over with ignition disabled and see if it is spinning.

Given the apparent complete lack of any sound effects, I think this is still a linkage problem, transfercase or transmission. The external transfercase linkage is the easiest to examine but if that is normal, a shift fork in either box could be the problem. Any failed clutch disc or stripped gear should be making all kinds of noise.

But definitely start with Posimoto's suggestion. That alone will potentially eliminate anything to the rear of the transfercase.

I agree with the linkage being a probable culprit. There's always the chance it was just barely in high range to begin with and finally kicked out when a load was off of it.

I think I have to agree with the shifter being the problem. Happened to me once on the '69. Drove with my right foot on it the last few blocks, never happened again. It's better than a friend that has to crawl underneith with a hammer to get his CJ5 into low range.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried locking the hubs and 4 wheel drive -nothing. Linkage looks ok. I guess it's internal.

Have you verified that the shift rods are in fact moving in and out?

I wonder if the tcase drive gear fell off the tranny output shaft...

Sure seems like some noise would have been associated with that, but definitely an easy enough check. :)

No noise when it happened to me. Let up on the throttle going down a mountain road and all of a sudden I was free wheeling. The nut backed off and the gear slid out far enough to dis-engage.
