I think winches and wire rope are rated in test ranges rather than actual failure. I've read a few sites and the actual failure point is over 2 1/2 times the rated limit. I suspect my Koenig will pull well above it's rating judging from what it did to the rear of my Jeep.

FWIW the 8000 pound PTO Koenig for CJ3A used 150 feet of 5/16 with 6x19 with a hemp core.

Yeah, wanted to say, I think the core type is key to flexibilty and longevity. The hemp will retain lubricant. But a steel rope core supports the outer bundles better under severe use, and reduces stretch.

6-26 will be more flexible than 7-19 but the smaller strands are more susceptible to wear and tear.

Yep. If you do go this route, be sure to get a lang lay cable for maximum abrasion resistance.

I work with a lot of wire ropes and rigging in my industry. Last year, we finally purchased two 1.5" x 50' Amsteel Blue loop eye slings with a WLL of 21 tons. Even though they do not have the abrasion resistance of wire rope, the ease of handling more than makes up for the bit of extra care they require. We wrap them with snowmaking hose (fire hose) for protection when needed.

This was last week. The length of the rig required us to use both the Amsteel and our regular 1.5"x60' steel pendants. You can guess which I preferred!

    Came up on Ebay.

Still available new someplace if you look hard enough but $$$.

EDIT- this one has been modified a bit from stock- at some point it got busted & welded back together with Bubba Boogers- I cleaned it up a bit & added some reinforcements.

Nice Howard! I like your engagement handle strap. Is that bicycle inner tube? Excellent idea!

Yup, scrounged an old tube off a guy at work. Pretty sure I scammed the idea off somebody here.

    Unfortunately it doesn't work :(

The winch won't disengage by letting go of the handle, not enough pull I guess. I'll try tightening it up at some future date.

I need one. Mine didn't disengage during a clean n grease and the fair lead got bent before I could run around and kill the engine.

    Yours looks a peach!
