Factory 1969 CJ5 heater box questions.

Hello,

This is my first post here. I am looking for a original heater unit for a 1969 CJ5. The jeep has 7500 original miles and is is excellent condition. It was never fitted with a heater (southern jeep). I have been searching around but my knowledge of early jeeps is rather limited.
I've looked at several pictures of heater boxes in 60's/early 70's CJ5's and they all appear to be different. I would really like to source a box that is considered original for the vehicle.

Can someone post a pic of an original box, controls, anything? Also, what is the year range I would be looking at for an original heater box for a '69 CJ5?

I've got a complete heater setup that'd I'd sell you, but I'm not sure why a person would bother unless it was for restoration; they aren't all that effective.

SIDSCJ I am in Colchester. Not too far away at all. I bet it would take two or three names before we find someone we know in common If you ever come to the colchester area you should take a look at the Jeep. 7500 original miles and not a spot of rust anywhere! jayhawkclint thanks for the offer and the word of advice. It is for a 100% stock '69. It won't be driven in the winter, looking for something to help in the spring and fall and want to keep it 100% original. I'm leaving first thing in the morning, gone until Monday but E-mail me at brian @ vtcar.com and let me know what condition the heater box is in and what you want for it.

A better blower motor will significantly improve the function of the stock heater.

 

I have a 68, with 6,000 original miles. 1/2 top metal, also original. Heater in great shape, but last winter, the first I've used it to plow my 300' driveway. As mentioned by others, the "heater" doesn't work well, I had to keep a tarp over the jeep and remove it when I wanted to plow, and wait for the snow to stop. Windshield completely frosted on the inside, sorry, but I have to breath. Outside of glass wouldn't defrost. If plowing slush, any splash froze to the outside of the windshield, and would stall the vacuum wiper. Not my first jeep, but the same as the 59 I had back in college. Added an aftermarket heater to that one, and the heat output was fine.

The ideal setup it the fender mounted gasoline heaters used on the artic jeep, that is if you don't mind sitting on a gas tank and having a gasoline fire on the right side fenderr.

For me, I picked up a aftermarket heater at the Carlisle swap meet for $10 bucks that blows up a storm. I'll rig it in there for next winter and see what that does for the heat. Unless you really want to have a perfect vintage jeep with perfect intage lousy heat, I would goe a small aftermarket heater instead. I had a small 1500 watt heater that I intended to plug in if I had to warm the jeep up before plowing. I could warm up the jeep, unplug the heater and plow until the windows frosted up too much. Ended up bundling up, and leaving the windows down so I could scrape the inside and outside with a long handled scraper.

 

Where did the up graded blower motor come from? Is the new motor a two or a three speed?
The bushings in mine whine for a while as things warm up. That must be lots of drag and pulling lots of amps. Have not yet blown any fuses.

 

Remember that on most of these early heat systems that the blending doors were controlled by vacuum. NO or LOW vacuum and the doors close.

 

My vacuum cans did not work when I got my '64. I ran choke cables to the levers the cans moved. Very positive control of all the functions. Mounted the cable tubes to a piece of angle iron and bolted that to the bottom of the dash.

 

Some internet post have instructions to adapt a GMC Blazer blower motor to the stock factory heater.
