Loud whine but shifts fine.

    Finally got the 62 out on a 10 mile drive today. It seemed to shift fine but once it got rolling it had a serious whine. Seemed too loud to be coming from the speedometer but it was jumping and not going any higher than 10 mph, vibrating like crazy. Maybe the speedo gear? Hopefully not a major tranny issue.

    Any thoughts? It's a stock 62.

    Speedo comes off the transfer case.. Have you checked the oil levels? K.I.S.S.

    Speedo jumping often suggests the inner cable may need grease, or is frayed. But it ought to indicate higher than 10 mph.

    Thanks, Ill check the fluids as soon as I can. I forget to mention I did put 1.5-2 inch springs on it but from what Ive been reading here that amount shouldn't really effect the angle much.


    Since I didn't really drive the Jeep much before I put it in the garage, its hard to know if it was whining before.

    Could it be the U-Joint at the t-case? Ill bet the u-joints are ancient, they probably need to be replaced anyways.

    Sounds like low fluid level in the TC. They can get pretty noisy.

    oil level or intermediate shaft . but the only way to check that is drop cover . really don't think speedo is your noise

    After doing a lot of reading /research today I think your right Twin2. The previous owner changed the fluid in the transfer/tranny, so it should be ok. Probably the shaft and bearing.

    i drove it tonight and it's a a high pitch whine. Not a steady whine but, loud quite loud quite loud quite. Know what I mean? And once the speed dropped down to around 5-10 it would stop whining.

    Are you saying it is quiet then its loud.

    Or are you saying its quite loud as in really loud?

    Sort of wondered about this too.
    OD Buffolo, Im not going to give you grief about spelling, My mother pounded it into me when I was young, so it seems to still be working.
    Some things still amuse me, Ect rather than Etc, axle or axel and of course all of the Warn spellings and willis or Willy spellings and wenches.
    I understand what they are saying but it still makes me smille. l understand what you are typing.

    As Twin2 mentioned, check the transfer case intermediate gear/shaft. The shaft often galls and the gear can make the loud whine you mentioned when the roller bearings are worn. You will need to drain the trans/t-case oil and drop the pan to check it. The intermediate gear shouldn't have much, if any play. The end of the shaft (should be 1 1/4") is visible from the rear of the t-case held by the lock tab.

    I was over on the 2A or 3B page and a member mentioned that they had caged bearings on his D18 intermeate shaft and there was about 3/8 of space between the bearing sets. I don't know, I've always set them up with needle bearings.

    The older Tcase with the 3/4" intermediate shaft did use a double set of caged needle bearings. You will find these on an original 2A Tcase.

    There are three different size shafts used over the production run of the D18 transfer case. The earliest used a 3/4" shaft, later updated to 1 1/8", and the latest were 1 1/4", each with a unique roller bearing set. Many aftermarket shafts are very soft metal and wear out very quickly, causing the infamous whine.

    Well, maybe this forum can help me with my Jeep and my English.
    Now it's not nearly as loud with the steel Meyer top off!
