Vehicle - 1974 CJ5 with a carbureted 232 cubic inch engine. I am guessing from the big black sooty spot on my garage wall the fuel/air mix is too rich. From past experience I know when ever I try to fix something it turns out worst any guidance to the clause and fix will be appreciated. Please remember I don't fix them I just drive 'em.

First thing I'd do is change the air cleaner and see if that improves things. Keep in mind these engines were not the inspiration of Al Gore. Does it blow a cloud of smoke when up to temperature or is this just a start-up thing? Is it the smoke blue or black? Blowing smoke on startup only can be a sign of dried up or missing valve seals. They get crunch when they get old. Sometimes they just fall away. This lets oil drip down your valve stems when you park it. Then when you fire it up the oil burns off. When running the engine firing pressure will keep oil from running down the stem too much. The inline 6 cylinder valve seals were not the most robust style. Not sure about V8, I haven't looked at them in a long time.

Your vehicle is carbureted, & has an automatic choke. It's going to run very rich at start up.
Check the adjustment of the choke and check the choke pull off for proper adjustment and function. If those are good, then I'd say it's just the way it is.
With modern fuel injected engines, people forget the little quirks of a carbed vehicle...

I also like the idea of painting the wall flat black. :)
