Replacing bearing race?

On my road to rebuilding the brake system, I noticed the driver side hub was spinning with a vibration.

I ordered new bearings and races but do I need to take the hub to have it pressed out or is it possible to replace the race myself?

I've done it myself by borrowing a seal/race installer kit to carefully set the new races. Most auto stores ought to rent out those guys for 40 bucks.

You can hammer out the old races. There should be two large notches at the back of where the race sits, on each side of the hub. I used a brass drift to knock them out from behind at that notch but if you use a non marring tool it ought to work well..drifts just have some good reach and girth to them.

Might not be right, but I have never used an installation tool on any wheel bearing race/cup I have ever installed. I also have never used any non marring tool. I have always used a punch, like a regular tool steel punch. I also have never chipped one or had any problem ever.

 

I hate to admit it especially given my profession, but .. Me Too..

 

Yep. Knock it out and tap in a new one, working carefully. Be gentle, pay attention to alignment and working it evenly.

Put the new race in the freezer for a few hours.
(If you're married, don't tell the wife!)
Use the old race as a tool to set the new race into place.

 

I have used this approach for races other than wheel bearings and other things. Works good and using the old race is perfect. Wife don't care what i put in the freezer long as its not a human head or a muskrat or something.

 

Yeah my wife is fine when I freeze stuff....its when I freeze a shaft and bake the bearing that she has a problem..... "you better not ruin my oven"

 

Hahaha yeah, she doesn't really like it when I stink up the house with parts in the oven.....

thats part of the reason I have 3 ovens....

 

Did that too on my old Norton - we were just newly wed at that time -- dunno if I could get away with this now.

 

Brilliant. Do you guys heat up the hub a little also with a torch?

 

I wouldn't heat it up, I think it may mess with the plumb of the cast possible warping things....?

 

I'd be wary of ruining any heat treatment the bearings are made with. Maybe a very little would be okay, but it has never been necessary in my experience.

These are a 'tunk' fit, not a shrink fit.

 

I suppose the deep fryer is bad too? We heat the bearings for the crusher to 350 for a few and freeze the shaft with dry ice and they slide right on then again they are a lot bigger than a wheel bearing.

 

mmm mmm mmmm nothing like the deep fried bearings mom used to make!
