Swapped out the 12 volt generator for a 63 amp delco alternator. Prior to this the generator only put out 1.75 amps and the battery eventually was drained. The regulator could be shot too. I tried polarizing but nothing seemed to work. So now the problem is it runs real rough and occasionally backfires.

For the swap itself, I followed some examples I found on this forum. For wiring, I connected the bat terminal directly to the battery. I wanted to use the alt. warning light so I hooked the gray wire to the top terminal on left on side of alternator. I also hooked the 2nd or right terminal to the bat terminal on alternator so it will entice the alt to kick in at lower rpm.

On the old regulator everything was disconnected. Any suggestions? Oh, it's a 1959 CJ5.

Is the alternator charging correctly now? Are you thinking the issue is alternator related?

Engine was all rebuilt a year ago. I have been using the Jeep for snow plowing all winter. Just got tired of charging the battery after each use. Hence the swap. Jeep ran fine before hand now not so well. Could be something else, just seems suspicious. I'll have to check but maybe I bumped some wires around the distributor and one of the cylinders is not firing.

Did not check the alt. yet except that the light did not light up. On the other hand the alt. gauge doesn't register but didn't before hand either. Do I have it hooked up correctly from what I previously stated?

Could be the points need to be filed and adjusted.

Or it could be a hundred other things. Start with a basic tune-up to specifications.

unless maybe electronic ignition im not sure that voltage would effect how these old things run in terms of backfire etc

Which 63 amp alternator did you get?

An internally regulated one, or an externally regulated one?

    Does make a difference.

It's and internally regulated one. On my way to take garbage out I stopped by the Jeep and checked the distributor wires. One seemed like it was pulled out of place but the boot was still attached. Might be the problem. Have to check on it further this weekend. Thanks

I did a similar swap, but not sure I still have pix, how about some pix of how you wired it?

Sounds like its wired right. Unplug the alternator and see if it changes. Or take belt off so alt doesnt spin.

Are we talking about alternator output, or a rough running engine? We seem to have both here.

When was the last time you adjusted the valves?

    Got new points and plugs?

Wobble in the distributor shaft? Putting in a Pertronix unit will take care of the last two. Set the timing.

My '60 would run good one day and rotten the next. Put in new points and condensor, and it ran good for a week. Put in the Pertronix and have not had a problem with that since 2008.

Well the original problem was that it ran rough directly after the alternator swap. So the question was if the alternator could be the root cause. I did go out this weekend in the rain and reseated the distributor wires to no difference. Then I took off the 2nd jumper wire on the alternator. That seemed to smooth things out but I wasn't able to drive it to test for sure. Through old forum posts I was lead to believe to route that wire to the battery terminal to "entice" the alternator to turn on earlier at lower rpm.
