I just keep finding more and more out about this dang thing as time goes on..

But I keep getting options fo what it coudl be, not what it is.

    What I was told

    70 cj5, 225 v6, auto tranny.

Now, that its home... I know this.

    225 v6, with turbo 400 on it.

Rear 44, is offset, and so is the output on the tcase.

I was told, a commando was the only thing with an auto, which should have a d20 behind it... Now im told this tranny may be a 18?

What are the specs on these.. good bad?

Any info on wtf this frame really is from? IT doesnt appear anything ahs been changed except for it being lengthended.

Yes that is a D18 transfercase. However, unless the engine/tranny is all moved forward quite a bit I cant see that being a TH400, maybe a TH350. I have a TH350 in my 67 and the rear driveshaft starts even with the front of the rear springs, and the TH400 is a few inches longer. The TH400 came behind the V-6 in the commandos from 1967 to 1971 and all of them had the dana 20 transfer case behind them, but the dana 18 transfercase would bolt on in place of the dana 20.

What does the pan on your auto look like? a square with a corner out of it?

Well take me out behind the barn and shoot me!! LOL I just looked at the picture again and there is a very obvious piece of 'not jeep' installed in that frame and I also looked at some of the old posts with pictures of the 4X4 Rabbit.

Yeap, frames been lengthended... to fit the body... ( Dont worry, im yanking parts and junkin the rest, I only need one 4x4 car)

I feel like a "dumb noob" asking all these questions, but I SERIOUSLY dont know jeep...

So obviously the tranny has been swapped in?.... What vehicle exactly had d18's? And what is the dela with 18's, what are the rations, chain ro gear.... will ti hold up to 250hp, and 35's.?

Any Jeep Universal from 1941 on had a D18 of some sort until 1971.

    2.46:1 low range.

    Gears.

Dana 20 and Dana 18 use the same iron case (for the most part). The 18 is offset, and the internal gears always turn. The 20 has a "direct" output in line with the input - also called the "silent" Dana 20 because there's less gear noise in 2WD. The 18 has better reduction, 2.46:1 vs. the 20's 2.03:1. Both are strong enough for most applications.

    Q. for the board - didn't all Jeepster Commandos come with the 20? All the Commandos I recall had the U-shifter. This is supposed to be a Commando frame.

why would a commando frame need the lengthening? Looks like cj frame to me.

Don't forget, Turbo 400's also came in early waggy's and p'ups with the Buick 350, however,I believe they also ran the D20 transfercase.

It should handle that combo easily. Weak spot is right on the bottom where the bottom hole gets near the whole straght behind the tranny. There are kits you can install that strengthen that spot though, its basically a thick bottom pan you install. Pretty much bulletproof then.

    All gears inside.
