Fill level is supposed to be at the bottom of the fill plug opening. I usually just keep filling slowly until it starts to dribble back out. An allen wrench makes a good tool for a dip stick-just don't drop it in there.

Did you do the rebuild yourself?? I suspect not by the nature of your question. Maybe you should take it to the shop that did the rebuild ???

As you have an early unit, you probably have a dana 18------and they are notoriously loud.

Good luck in your efforts toward a quieter Jeep.

I did the rebuild with a friend, however he took Ira out and we pulled it apart and replace 5 gears. I owned a small engine shop and was busy so Gary put it back in. To me it looks like you can get underneath and there is a plug on the side. I am getting close to 70 so I really don't feel like crawling under the thing. I was hoping the was another way. Took the off the floor removanle panels thinking I would find a oil plug there but did not.

You can actually add oil to it by taking out one of the shift tower bolts and fill with pointy spout, but you have no way of knowing the level of the oil that way

That was where I thought the plug was. The jeep leaks, not from the engine I think from the PTO. I don't believe the tranny leaks however, I wanted to check as it makes such a loud whine. We could have gotten the lash a little close but I don't believe so. Maybe it's just whinny. Thanks for all the advice and help. You folks are terrific!

Checking the oil and making sure you put in the proper weight oil would be the first step

The whine may be the transfercase. Mine whines when the oil starts to get low.
