Can you take it apart and put an aftermarket horn inside the case? I have an aftermarket on mine and it sounds similar. But it is somewhat small and might fit inside the one you have. I think the brand is available at many auto parts stores. Fiammmm? It is in the bottom right of this photo.

There are also a couple of military auto lite horns on ebay but are probably 24V.

mehh You could say that about the whole jeep smarty. :toetap: chainsawguy
If yours went out (assuming you had one like that) what would you do wiseguy?

There is alot of parts for the older jeeps that are floating around plentiful and then there is this horn for one. Mine works thankfully but other than the military 24v version, when is the last time one of these 12v models has come up for sale.

Actually I took it apart, tested the coil to make sure it was good then cleaned the contacts. Sounds a little funky but I haven't properly riveted it back together yet, once I do I'll adjust the contact tension screw until it sounds 'right" & it'll be good to go.

Maybe because they are not an essential item, people didn't save them.

I would search ebay until one shows up.

Easy there smarty. Being smarmy gains you no points here. You asked a question, and while flip, it was an honest straightforward answer you got.

Yes, I realize that. I also realize there was no ill will intended in his answer. I (thought) I had asked a honest straight forward question as well. Personally, I thought his answer was sort of an attempt at humor so, I (thought) I answered in like fashion. No ill will intended on my part. If it didn't come out that way, apologize.

I just thought it was interesting how certain parts are harder to find than others. Everybody loves the characteristic "beep beep" horn so you would think somebody would have figured out how to make em, like the newly scripted tailgates a few years back. Another part I thought would have been more available is the original speedometer. They were a little more available and I've even seen a NOS one a time or two in the past but, they are sort of hard to come by currently.

Just one of those things I guess, and I was just wondering if it was just my crackpot observation or maybe somebody had the market cornered.

I'll go away now so just rest the muskets and pitchforks......

There is an aftermarket beep-beep horn. It's not exactly like the Jeep horns, but it suffices for most people.
    http://www.amazon.com/Wolo-Model-370-Black-Metal/dp/B000H84UVK
It's supposed to be the Roadrunner horn.

Jeeps are a small and cash-poor aftermarket environment compared to popular old cars. Utility vehicles in general (Jeeps and trucks and similar) just don't have the value that old cars do. Some Grand Wagoneers have high value, but even then they don't support a wide-ranging aftermarket. About the only utility vehicles that have significant value today are older "1/2 ton" pickups, and then only certain years and makers.

It's just economics - the market is not there for these obscure Jeep parts.

    You kids play nice now.R)
Well it looks like you are trying to stay original but if not the horns at your local auto parts store would suffice.

Try finding the siren that was mounted to the drivers side front fender in the M38A1, and maybe some of the real early CJ5's.

I have taken a few horns apart. Most of the time corrosion inside keeps them from working. If you don't have one to start with, you might find someone that has one that doesn't work for cheap.

Probably because they would rust out and/or vibrate off or otherwise quit working. And once they crapped out, they went in the trash and were replaced with whatever was handy, if at all. My '56 had a cable operated ooga horn on it. These are Jeeps, not Bentleys, repairs were often redneck.

My original horn is the crowning glory to my Jeep. Oh, to see the smiles it brings to the crowd around the campfire at the end of the day as I pull in! I don't know what I would do if it quit.

Ah, go ahead and kill it and put it out of everybody's misery. If I had the power to delete the whole thing, I would. Apparently, I'm some sort of a nutball or something.
