I've seen worse worm gears, but that one is pretty worn. FWIW, you can press the pins out of the sector, rotate them and press them back in. Like brand new! :)

Patrick, do you use heat for that or can you just press 'em out cold? I knew rotating the pins to "fresh meat" was possible, but I've never tried it myself.

I'm in negotiations to buy Don X's old setup that he removed when he want Saginaw. His people are gonna contact my people.

Hopefully his will be better than the one I just took off. Worst case maybe I'll be able to make one good setup out of the two.

Not only did you land a rare M170, this version Radio conversion was used for the Marine Corps. and is designated AN/MRC-87 !!! VERY FEW AROUND AND I'VE YET TO SEE ONE COMPLETE!
The bracket that is bolted outboard side of passenger cowl is for the UHF Antennae Mast.
If those axles are orig? consider yourself real lucky as all USMC G758 variants (which incl your M170) came equipped with power-locks both front and rear.
Nothing wrong with modifying to your hearts content. Though, I am compelled to perform my due diligence as a fellow M170 enthusiast. You have been informed.:D

BTW, the forward portion of the very rare stock fuel tank is not mounted correctly. The bottom edge should be parallel to the bottom body edge. The support brackets that hold the tank should ride flush against the retainer underneath your driver-side floor. Shoot me a pm should you have any quest. :stout:

@ Dave in York, PA, I agree on the planet o'rust. I live north of Scranton, and the brine/salt/humidity/salt/more salt really kills the stuff up this way. Plus, every single Jeep this way has had a plow at some time in its life. It's like a law or something.

what is the well on the passenger side for?

Originally as an ambulance, it housed the spare tire, Fuel can and axe.

I've only done it once, and I heated it. Concentrate on the plate, not the pins.

Patrick - thanks. I'll do that if I try pressing the pins.

modified - I'd ask any questions here in the forum so anybody else could get the info as well, but I appreicate the knowledge. Thanks.

As for my vehicle, the data plates aren't completely stamped (just the VIN) and the remaining plates have been painted over. I'm slowly getting through the layers with brake clean and Acetone, but I don't have the patience to get it done any time soon.

My rig is probalby not Marines 'cause it's open/open front and rear. I haven't popped the diff covers yet, but unless it's loaded with the world's most pathetic Power-Locs they're open diffs. I can't tell from the original paint color, but it doesn't seem as dark as other Marine Jeeps of the era I've seen. It's more like the OD green of my Army-issue M-715.

I knew it was a radio rig as soon as I saw the UHF mount. One of the only factory sticker not painted over is the instructions for setting up the cables for the AN/MRC-83 and AN/MRC-87 radio sets. My rig still has the momentary toggle, hour meter, and master on/off switch for the radio set, but all the stock wiring was disconnected by previous owners.

Oh, and the fuel tank is dropped so the previous owner could mount that swanky Dodge seat! Hopefully he didn't drill through the floor into the top of the fuel tank. I'm going to drop the tank to remove the seat and put some low-back buckets and belts in after I get the steering straightened out.

When you get a chance, post some pics of the Engine bay.
Also, check with Brent (Mullinsjeepparts.com) in TX. I think he still has a few NOS steering worm gears.

I did a resto-mod on my A1 that had been previously "civilianized". I contemplated rewiring using the military switch but it was not going to be pretty... I instead used WWII switch gear including a push-pull headlight switch. Where the multi position switch was I put a plate that has black out light and dash light switches. I put 5" off road lights in black out brackets and switch them with that. At least compared to the WWII cushions, the A1 seats are really pretty comfortable, don't regret them at all.

Look forward to seeing this project progress!

Figure I'd pop in and update this. Been a while. After getting the steering back together it kinda sat while I did that RESQ1 project for Discount Tire. Finally finished that project and handed it off to them right after New Year's so I decided to get the M-170 ready to take to TDS.

Started off by removing the Dodge buckets the previous owner had installed. That entailed dropping the fuel tank and removing the 4-inch wooden blocks he RTV'd to the top of the tank as a spacer so the tank would clear the bolts he used to hold the seat mounts in.

I didn't have any tubing or steel handy to mount the new low-backs. I was too cheap and lazy to go to the steel supply place, so after a little head scratching I figured out how to recycle some steel from another vintage Jeep I had laying around. Check the June '14 Jp Magazine if you want any more info.

Got 'er pretty much sorted. Front seats are mounted and the passenger is removable so the utility compartment is still accessible with the stock, unaltered lid. I need to put seatbelts in the front and back and bolt the new rear bench in.

Otherwise, I'll toss some retro tires on the KH Renegade wheels, change out all the oils for fresh stuff, fog it OD green, and will probably install a new carburetor and for sale sign on it. Don't think it'll be going to TDS after all, but I'll shoot some teaser updates as I get 'em done.

Pretty cool. My kids grew up in jeeps and I think they "get" it. For what its worth, I appreciate the write-ups on the older stuff way more than I do the new stuff. Would I like to have a '12 or newer JK, probably, but the wow factor and fun is in fixing up the older stuff. Seems like everyone has a new jeep that they "built" with bolt on stuff from a catalog...I understand that not everyone is into or even capable of cutting, welding, and grinding, but that's the builds I'm watching, and that's what I gravitate to at a show or meet. I will always be a subscriber. Keep the info coming!
