I just picked up a 79 cj5 and it has some extras on it so I was wondering how to tell if it was a special edition like a golden eagle or renegade? The jeep has a clock, tach, under hood light, 12 volt lighter under the dash, trim bezel around the gauges, side steps, tilt steering column. I do not see any evidence of decals on the hood or the sides. Also is the paint code on the top of the grill? Will that tag tell me anything else? Thanks

Can't help you with the option package - see if you can find a sales brochure for '79.

The paint code is on the VIN plate, on the driver's side firewall near the brake cylinder. The factory service manual has a picture of the VIN tag that tells you which numbers are the paint and trim code. Look here http://oljeep.com/gw/76_tsm/Section0A.pdf at figure A-6. This is the '76 manual, but it should be the same for '79. Then report back with the paint and trim codes, and I can look them up for you in the parts book.

    Welcome from Boston!

Thank you for the welcome and information Tim. There is a tag on top of the grill that looks like a paint code of 9K which is sable brown met. Is there any way to get what some would call a build sheet? I would guess with AMC dissolved it would be difficult but did someone pick them up? I will see if I can find a factory service manual and a sales brochure through out my travels.

The factory service manual is easy. They are reprinted today. Here's one source - http://www.bjsoffroad.com/prod-674.htm - BJ's will give you a modest discount if you are a member of the IFSJA or FSJN forum. But all the Jeep parts retailers sell these reprints. Sometimes the original manuals appear on eBay.

No VIN plate on the firewall? That will have the paint code and the trim code. The trim code might give you a clue to how the Jeep was equipped.

I know of Wagoneer owners that have requested "build sheets" for their cars from Chrysler, and what Chrysler sends them is very amusing. The list returned is a mix of old and new features, many of which did not exist in the car's era. So you can try it - I would not hope for more than amusement. Chrysler has a mechanism for "build sheets" somewhere.

1CE is bucket seats, black "Cara" vinyl. Not sure what "Cara" means, but it's the other type of vinyl besides "perforated" and "denim."

    Not very informative, I fear.

I hope it is OK to post a scan here, if not, please delete...
This are the pages of the 1979 booklet, if you need more I would have to dig into
    it a bit more...
Unfortunately the size of my scanner does not fit to the format of the brochure...

Being a 1979 it could be a silver anniversay addition as well as a Larado or Renegade.

I think, Laredo was available from the 80 model year on...
Does your FIN tell the 79?

A 79 with those feature is most likely a Renegade. However it could have just been a special order with the interior package. Does it have a 4 spd or a 3spd? Has it been repainted? If it has been repainted and the trim plate is gone it makes it a lot harder to figure out. If it is original paint and there are no Renegade stickers on it, likely it's a special order or unique dealer ordered configuration - which I think are some of the coolest ones around.

This jeep has a 3 speed trans. It has been painted over but very poorly, most of their paint is coming off and I can see a nice brown in many areas especially the hood and I do not see evidence of any hood stickers. The vehicle identification plate does not state if it had a package such as the renegade.

Pretty sure there's no trim plate on any Jeep after 1972. The trim info is on the metal VIN plate.

Hmm. My best guess is its a well optioned base model then. I believe the Renegade was a significant added cost to the vehicle. But just the interior trim package and rally tach and clock gauges could be had for less money and really upped the interior from its spartan base model look. Definitely look at other areas for cool options as it still could have been a special order. You might have a limited slip differential, high capacity cooling, etc.

The plate under the hood on the cowl on the intermediates is what I was referring to. The one that has the VIN, trim package number and color codes, I know they had them up till 75 not sure if they have all the trim info on them after 75 though.

Before '73-74 there was a separate foil trim plate with paint and trim codes glued to the passenger side of the firewall. After '72-73 the paint and trim code are on the VIN plate on the driver side of the firewall.
