Glad you got a kick out of it. I was posting on transmission coolers, you don't have to worry about quick mount kits for auto trans coolers on your '5.

Also I couldn't figure out why I kept loosing third gear. (couldn't go over 45 mph)
turns out I had a bad vacuum leak, put some lock tite on the bolts in the carb and problem solved. :)

Made some brackets for the radiator fan

I will get the completed pictures for this tomorrow, I can't find on camera

Starter was making bad noise, I took apart and found cup full of rat stuff... Works great now, no issues.

nothing in starter gear, plunger and brushes looked good
    [IMG]

I picked up a MSD ignition and installed it, I now have flamethrower coil (45,000) and pertronix ignitor
I love how smooth the buick is now, then adding the coil you feel a little bit more power.

    rubber feat
    [IMG]

longer screws to go against the galvanized heater block off plate
    [IMG]

Box ready to be bolted in
    [IMG]

nice sunny day, because I had to try out the MSD with new coil
    [IMG]

I will get more pictures tomorrow of the completed installs, I picked up a t18 & dana 20 with 3:15 teralows but that will probably be installed next break or power steering not sure. (around april)
the play in the steering wheel is pretty bad so I might hold off on transmission install. Budget, and fact parents my be moving means jeep has to stay together at this moment. It stays at their house, while I am down in Sacramento. Once I take care of the Transmission swap and power steering I will probably bring down to Sacramento.

Just read from the beginning to this last page and was very motivated to keep working on my old cj5.
I think ill just paint important stuff and not the whole entire jeep like you did. What kind of power steering pump do you plan on putting on yours because i plan on doing mine the same way.

Thanks, the idea was to get it going so I could drive it. Just do a little at a time on yours, you would be suprised what a hour or two here and there does.

I was going to use a postal steering column, then I was going to use a new power steering box from autozone. That way I won't have to deal with issues that might come up, otherwise I find a slow ratio box.
a member here named Pielut, has a great build you should read. I was going to go off of his design with a slight tweak which is the steering column.

one of these days I will get a proper grinder and a drill press things would go faster. In mean time its hacksaw, dremel, and hand drill

    MSD ignition finished the install
    [IMG]

New coil to finish it off, 45 thousand volts I like
    [IMG]

So that is all of the upgrades and pictures for now... I got to wait a couple months. I will see about picking up some parts here and there in mean time.

The toyota has a 3.0 and alot of people call it the 3. slow because it is slow on acceleration and revving and in my experience sucks.

    Piff,
Just read your thread. I would like to thank you for bringing back old memories of my first jeep and the lessons I learned by fixing it up and getting my first vehicle on the road.

    i was 14 years old and the Jeep was a 1949 CJ3A.

Lotts of good life lessons learned along the way.

    Thanks,
    Toolman_ar

73cj5, oh that is what your talking about. I haven't heard anything good about those v6
I would like to pick up a 1st gen four runner for a daily driver that way I can spend more time doing upgrades on the jeep. I currently walk everywhere, unless i'm up where jeep is.

    thanks toolman_ar,
its kinda hard to believe how much one can learn by having a jeep. I have fixed many car problems for peoples cars, and fixed other cars I have had because of this jeep.

got some goodies I picked up over the course of the year,
T18 transmission adapted dana 20 with tera lows
    [IMG]

Rocker guards, need to be installed
    [IMG]

recovery points, and a new grinder the local hardware store had a glitch in the computer and decided to let me keep the lower price can't beat $40 for a good grinder

This is what im going to try and work on over next week,
    [IMG]

I am going to the yard tomorrow to try and pick up a dj steering column, I will look for a double v-belt crankshaft pulley, and a 4 bolt steering box.

I already have the metal for the frame railes and box except for the tube, I got a 60-80 amp 12 SI alternator to install which will probably do wonders with all the eltronics I have in the jeep.
Should be a good week. I am hoping I can get a hold of my buddy to borrow his welder to do this stuff, as well as weld in new shock mounts. Still need to flex the jeep out for the shocks, I found the stump but dirt was too loose to drive up. I guess I got to go offroading to figure the shocks out.

More to come later, just thought i would give you guys a preview

Got some work done today and got some more parts.

I got the plate cut off with the grinder today, and the weld ground off of the frame rails
    [IMG]

I am going to leave the bumper on for right now, so I can still drive the jeep. I can at least measure and cut out the parts for the frame rails.

I went to the wrecking yard in kelseyville, and upper lake.
I picked this up at upper lake wrecking yard and took me forever (3 hours) to pull it. This was by far the hardest part I have ever pulled at a yard.
At the other yard I had to take these, I got the set for $100.
now I need to obtain these parts.
get a double or triple v-belt crank shaft pulley,
    power steering box
    steering shaft.
    some bolts
talk to buddy, so I can use his welder to weld the frame rails, shock mounts.

Nice find on the seats...........looks like someone extended the front frame rails 6-8 inches? Now the work begins.

Yes some one did, it does make a nice work bench.

I need to shorten it though, hence why the grinding of the frame rail stops. I also found out on a stump while trying to measure for shocks, the bumper ruins the approach angle to drive up stuff.

got the rockers installed, I need to take the grinder to the back edge a little and a touch of paint.

I went to the wrecking yard again, and picked this up for $75, more than I wanted to pay.
its out of a 1975 el camino, the engine was already pulled for me to give me some shade from the hot sun.

Now I need to know if I can use the postal steering column u-joint and or the el camino rag joint. I think the rag joint is a no judging by how the box looked best with my steering.

Anyone have any ideas for extending bumper 3 inches past spring plate?
I am thinking weld a strip of steel so its same width as the frame rail, then box it, then strap the top and bottom of the front frame horns. Only thinking about this because of the verticle and horizontal welds it will have which might lead to cracks during a recovery?
here is a picture of what i'm talking about. This is the bottom frame rail, drivers side.

Yes, I know its weird that I did a v-bevel like that instead of doing the normal corner weld, I am using a lincoln dual voltage welder but the shop only has 110. I am slowly remembering all of the welding stuff and have been having a hard time getting the penetration I want. Deeper the bevel, the more penetration I get, I am going to slow down the wire speed tomorrow and grind the upside down welds. Its hit and miss right now. Either the welds look nice like the photos I took, or they look like someone was learning to weld on my jeep. :( no photos, too embarrassed.

Got my new triple pulley for the crankshaft, courtesy of a member on here :)

Does any one know how you count splines when the shaft is like this?

If anyone has opinions on what type of shaft I should run that be great?
I am going to look into the XJ shaft tomorrow, I think the postal column is a 36 spline and not sure on the box, or it was 30
I could also grab that postal steering shaft and bring the right tools to pull it, or the el camino shaft with a bell coupling but that was too short.

Measure the OD of that shaft if it's 13/16" it should be 36 spline if it's 3/4" probably 30 spline..........If the box mounts with 4 bolts normally 13/16"x 36 . What thickness are the plates that your installing? The frame is about .120 thick +/- if that material is thicker it make the job a little harder........much easier doing a corner weld.....................Buy some scrap metal of the thickness your welding and practice on that.

And on the drivers side where your going to mount the box make sure before you cover that up you do whatever work inside the frame rails that needs to be done for strength.............might be gussets or tubes for your bolts to go through ????? so that it doesn't allow the frame rail to be collapsed when you tightened up the bolts.
