Brake master cylinder

I know this has been covered but I cannot find the correct replacement part number for my master cylinder. 1967, 225 v6 stock. The current (factory) one has dual compartment and the bolt though the lid and is on the frame rail. I am not getting any pressure to the rear and before I pull it out I want to know I can get the replacement. Anyone have this part number? It is not an upgrade, just replace what is there from the factory. Nothing on Walcks page and Herm shows an updgrade from a single chamber??? Is that one the correct one??

I bought one from Autozone, they said it would fit, it wasn't too much $$ but it didn't just bolt up. It didn't have the bolt on top it was the bar that rocks over the top, and I had to switch the pushrods. It also had the wrong sized outlets and I had to buy adapters.

 

The one Herm sells is meant to be used with his conversion. An application from an AMC car iirc.

My understanding is many aftermarket replacements use a bail to hold the cover on instead of a bolt. No personal experience with this however.

945566 is a Kaiser Jeep part number. If you have the factory parts book, you can often find what you are looking for this way.

 

Is there a source for original or reprint parts catalogs? Speaking as a parts guy, I'd love to have one for my '70 CJ!

 

I bought one at Walck's in the 90's. At least they used to carry them. It was an exact replacement (Wagner I believe).

I have the '74-80 book, which I bought as a reprint from BJ's. They also offer this earlier book http://www.bjsoffroad.com/prod-682.htm but it's for the FSJs only. If you look, you may find a similar offering for the early CJs.

 

I believe that all new replacement master cylinders use the bail type clip for the top cover.
They are not hard to locate nor very expensive from local the auto parts dealers.

OEM NOS Wagner master cylinders for 1967-1971 CJ's are extremely, make that excedingly rare and they are expensive to deliver.
I know where to get a very limited few but they run $275 each.
OEM NOS Rebuild kits are also very rare but not nearly as expensive.

 

From the link to Turner's that I posted above, it appears that the cylinder they are selling is a recent new offering. They specifically say that the cap bolts on. The web site has a very good picture of the item. Not cheap, at $175.

This. At least what I found. Many places, say it will fit and even show a picture that looks like your original. But when you pull it out of the box, it's not the same.

I decided I would retrofit the more common style, I also kept the original if I ever want to service it someday.

 

I just contacted Crown directly with a question about their part #J0945556, asking if this Master Cylinder is a stepped bore like the original Wagner Lockheed.
Reply back: "I just went a measured the diameter of the pistons inside J0945556. The outside piston measures .980 and the inside piston measures .943".

Thank you all for the great information. I now have the correct part number to work with and will pull the old MC and see what needs to be done knowing it is available. I suspect I will need to by a new one. Thank you.

Just read this and have a quick question for anyone with info. I have a early 67 cj (single chamber master cylinder. Does the later two chamber version bolt to the fram the same as the early? Sure would be a quick conversion if it did. Thanks

No it doesn't. That's why there are conversions out on the market to convert that consist of bracketry, master cylinder, fittings, etc. If you can find all the pieces from a late '67 to '71 yours can be converted but they are getting scarce and I wouldn't trust a used master cylinder unless I knew for certain it was in good working order when removed.
