Transmission Troubleshooting Question

    When driving my Jeep i have noticed a knocking sound eminating from what seems to be the transmission (5 speed suzuki sidekick). It only happens when i take the out of gear and either with or without the clutch engaged, it knocks when the jeep is coming down from say 45mph. no sounds going under power, shifts great, just a weird knock when slowing down. I put the Tcase in neutral and went through the gears doing everything i could and i did not get a noise at all. What other tests could i perform? After rebuilding the AX5 in the YJ and knowing the suzuki 5 speed will be akin to that design i do nto see how anything could knock like that in the transmission. It doesnt seem clutch related since it happens with and without the clutch engaged. I want to drive it but i just dont want it to blow up on the road, but i may have to see if it gets worse.

    get the rear wheels off the ground and secure, with the t case in gear and see if you hear it then. maybe it's not in the transmission.

    rear pinion nut/yoke tight? Maybe some movement from the pinion shaft?

    The rear yoke i just repalced the pinion bearings and seals. it is tight.

    I will remeasure the rear angles, When i set everything up it measured fine but i messed with suspension by adding leafs and such i will recheck.

    I popped it up on jackstands and gave it a run. Everything shifted fine, no noises or anything. So this at least lets me breath a bit better that i do not have to drop the tranny to rebuild it.

    Here is a pic of the rear shaft. Pinion is up at 10 degrees. I couldnt get a good angle off the tcase output.
    I did have a vibration, but i believe it might be the driveshaft out of balance and tires out of balance. I did not see any marks on the yokes from any contact with ujoints binding

    The u-jonts can bind without making contact with the yokes. Pretty steep u-joint angle. It may be the pic but is the onion pointin downward? Remember, under decel the pinion will try and twist down toward the ground increasing the chance of binding.

    Yes, and check the Ubolts and your mount to the springs. Had a similar issue years back on a buddies and it ended up being the Ubolts were not tight any longer.

    Guess I should add that it allowed the pinion to pitch down more which was causing the binding.

    The rear pinion is at +10 degrees. It is not pointing down. I will check the front ubolts. The sound seems to be in the front, but i understand that the noise can easily travel. Thanks!

    Whot is your left to right angle on those u-joints? Is it possible that your transfercase outputs and the pinions don't match that way?
    Could be you need to change to double-cardone (or whatever the name) is for that driveline.

    Or what about wheel bearings? One of those going bad will do that, too.
