I have a Dauntless powered, 1970 CJ-5. I have narrowed it down to 1970 using the serial number and where it stands in the build data. It has not been registered since 1980 and was only used to plow the former owners driveway so it only has about 12 K miles on it . It seems that at some point in its life it had clutch linkage problems, which is the cable actuated version. The clutch is presently jury rigged with an asst. of stock and home made parts. I need to get a reliable linkage into the vehicle and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what the easiest and most dependable way to do it. I don't what to get to fancy or technical as I can't do a lot due to a bad back. However, I've got to get this straighted out. I can't even find a good schematic of what the stock version looks like, the one in the Service manual is less than helpful as is the data for replacing it. And I have found many of the parts are not even available.Does anyone have a good idea or something they have done to get a good linkage set up in the vehicle.
Any help would really be appreciated.

The cable linkage used in 1970-71 functions pretty well if in good condition. You can still buy a replacement cable. Depending on what's missing, you should be able to get the pieces you need from a Jeep specialty wrecking yard, like J&W in Antelope CA.

Maybe someone on here has a parts book that includes the 1970 model year. The factory book should have a useful drawing of all the needed parts.

Which manual are you looking at? I expect there were supplements for the 1970 and 1971 years that may cover your linkage, and have a good picture.

Maybe a chain clutch system is in order?

I'd suggest using the cable system. I have that in my '70, and I think this is the best factory clutch linkage system that Kaiser ever came up with. It cannot fall out like the bellcrank system can with the frame in an extreme flex situation.
I got a new cable from Walcks if I recall.

Give us some pictures of what you have now so we can tell what's missing or otherwise incorrect. Mine is complete original so I know what it is supposed to look like. Missing brackets can be fabbed up with a pattern to work with.

I think the only thing that's not locally source able is the adjuster that connects to the throw out arm.

You can get complete bellcrank kits, I think Kaiser Willys has one. Walcks has a lot of parts listed on his site, he would be a good phone call to make, he knows a lot about the V-6 Jeeps. Check the military parts vendors too. Will be changing the cable out for the Bellcrank system on my jeep in a month or so.

I'd call Walcks and tell them what you have. I'm sure they can help you out with what you need. The stock system is pretty good and actually low tech. Is the linkage not working? I just had issues w/ my linkage, turned out to be the tranny mount was shot. Caused the linkage to be out of alignment. Replaced it and all is right in the world.

Post a pic of what you have. Pics are always good.

The cable system works fine as long as you maintain the seals at each end and lubricate the cable once a year.................water crossings , road dust and moisture and just plane old lack of care is the cause of most failures.

Here are some photos of the original set up on a 1971 V6. The cable is Rugged Ridge part #17736.01

The last picture, what is that bracket called?, what does it mount to? and does anyone have a part number? I have having an issues with my clutch cable where it has a mount point on the frame and then it circles around to the clutch fork. It isn't working nor can I adjust it. I get little or no cable travel to pull the fork back. It's driving me crazy on how to fix it. I am thinking that this bracket might just solve my problem and allow me to adjust the clutch release cable adjuster. Help would be greatly appreciated![IMG]

It's the factory 70-71 CJ5 clutch cable bracket; it bolts/mounts to the transfer case.
I think that bracket part number is: 992730.
The entire clutch cable conversion kit (anti chatter) part number is: 992824.

These show up on ebay once in a while.

Place a wanted to buy ad in the classifieds here and see what turns up.

Here's the link to the PDF version of the Factory Service Manual. It should be very helpful for maintenance and repairs on your Jeep. JeepĀ® Parts Manuals online

I was having frame flex issues preventing clutch proper clutch operation when wheelin in my early CJ5. I bought the AA chain linkage setup and it worked great

I have one available. My brother found two and I only needed one. I paid 25.00 + shipping. PM me if you want it. Make sure this is what you need. My last pic was too small and hyperlinked to one that used to be on ebay. So, I am re-using the image on a previous post to give a better look at the part. The one I have has been painted black at one time. but the mounting and shape is identical to this one.
