camshaft tensioner

    in a bit of a panic as i am getting ready to button up the 225 after a new camshaft install when i come across a thread showing a camshaft tensioner. when i pulled my timing chain cover off there was no tensioner, but could be the work of p.o. then i read that some 225's did'nt have one. need help and clarification from those more learned than this humble back yard wrench turner.

    just took this picture for ya, its off my 66 225

    so I don't see a tensioner on mine, just the timing chain tensioners.

    This is how it should look. Tensioner on left.

    The two holes on the left just above the bearing block (offset with one slightly larger) is where the tensioner (called a damper in the FSM) mounts. Big hole is pivot bolt, small hole is the spring anchor. The holes on the right are where the other damper (static not spring loaded) mounts.

    my apologies to OP I thought the tensioner against timing chain was the timing chain tensioner.

    I think he's referring to the thrust button and spring that fit on the end of the cam and ride against the cover.

    Are the different sources maybe talking about the same item but under different names?

    What I'm getting out of this is that some 225's have the cam tensioner on the end of the cam (like Rocky's) and some don't (like mine and like piffey's). This has been my understanding for quite some time.

    Rocky - thanks for the pictures of the timing chain setup. Very helpful.

    Service manual calls it cam shaft thrust retainer. My 66 didn't have one and still don't.

    I have the spring loaded button, but replaced the chain with a double roller and eliminated the tensioner.

    i believe all the cam button does is make sure the cam does not "walk" move front to rear.

    An easy way to tell if your engine had a thrust button is to look at the inside of the timing cover. If there is a wear mark in line with the end of the camshaft on the timing cover it had a thrust button. If no wear mark it probably didn't.
