CJ5 tailgate logo questions

I been looking at jeep part magazines and I keep seeing 3 dif Steel Tailgates being advertised for 46-71 Jeep CJ5s. One with no Logo on the tailgate, one with Willys, and another with Jeep. I have a 1966 CJ5A and it has no logo stamped into it. Is that right or did someone replace it? Also, I see 2 dif kinds of 4 Wheel Drive logos. Mine has been painted over. Anyone know what years they used what stamped tailgates and what 4wd logo? Thanks

I got no logo with the first stencil that you posted, but it was painted over.

If I remember correctly the last stencil was from when Willys owned jeep

However, I'm not the original owner and can't not tell you if it was changed or not.

The tailgate with "Jeep" on it was used in the intermediate years (72-on)
Your 66 was made after the demise of the Willys name, so that wouldn't have been on it.
I believe the blank one is correct for your year.

 

Center panel stampings... as I have seen it recorded.

'45 to '63, "WILLYS"

'63 to '71, blank

'71 to '81 "Jeep"


So your jeep seems correct.

 

I recently bought a stencil from walcks4wd.com that says Jeep 4 Wheel Drive but according to their site for a cj5 I needed to tape off Jeep for a universal and only paint on 4 wheel drive. and other research ive done seems to point to that bottom stencil you pictured being used on cj5 without using jeep word from years 57-64 after that I don't know. Perhaps there was no stencil for your year?

 

Not quite true, the Jeep logo was on the 71's and I think the 70 model. My 71 is all original with Jeep on it. The 66 should have been blank from the factory.

 

My dads 69 & my 70 are both blank. I know that both are original. His still has the stencil (original paint)
but I don't remember which style.
Its possible the Jeep tailgate started with the AMC buyout in late 70...
We used to have a 71, but it had no tailgate...Renegade II

 

Pete was a Mar '70 build and has the Jeep stamp in the tailgate.

 

The Tux-in-a-barn is a '63, and its tailgate had no stamp.

 

Oct 69 mfg date on a 1970 is blank.
I bet it is an AMC addition, they took over Feb of 70 and the
70 models have
under seat gas tanks or rear gas tanks,
no reflectors on the front fenders or reflectors on the front fenders.
