Is there anyway to modify a cj/yj top to fit a cj5 or are they all universal? :? I am pretty lost? I just totaled my 93yj and picked up a 82 cj5 My buddy has an old jeep hard top from 1980 or abouts. I just need a little help?

    Welcome Gator Fan.

It could possibly be done to modify a YJ top to fit a CJ-5 if you were handy with fiberglass and custom glasswork.

Best bet is to buy a new or used hard top for the CJ-5 though.

    Tops are definitely NOT universal.

They are unique to the body that they fit.
    In brief:
    CJ-5s from 55-75 share tops
CJ-5s from 76 on have their own top
CJ-7/YJ tops can interchange with some difficulty.
CJ-8 half cabs will fit a CJ-7 or YJ

    HTH!

As I noted, CJ7 and YJ tops interchange. CJ5 tops do not except with other CJ5's.

The problem is at the side window. Even if you are handy with fibre-work, I'm not sure there's any place (any one, single location) you can remove the differential in distance from the door to the back and not have to modify the side window size. Might could do some kind of multi-cut. But that would cost more in time and money than just finding a used CJ5 fiberglass hard top.

At least that's my $.02 worth.

The windshield on a 76 and up CJ5 is narrower at the top and is angled backwards more towards the rear of the vehicle. You can swap windshields and get a later model hardtop to work on an earlier CJ5. Search the forums, this topic has been covered extensively.

i did this mod some yj tops are made of plastic mine is. it took 4 cuts one through the rear glass about 4 inches removed, one down the middle from that cut to the front edge to allow the top to bow to match the windshield frame and one down the sides of those pcs to increase width to match the width difference at the windshield.the 2 on the sides ended up 3 inches in front to nothing at the back.glassed together and bondo to fill...a coat of raptor liner and 2 cut pcs of safety glass total cost 125 the top cost 15 from the boneyard.

i searched extensively. as i always do. i try to find it myself before i ask questions. how else would i have found a 7 year old thread? one of the reasons for these forums is that knowledgable people such as a lot of the good folks at this site can help people like me and themselves to a wealth of information i'm sorry that my search didn't bring me everything i need and i aksed a question. i guess i'll try a different site. if questions are not allowed.:)

Well, it has been covered extensively... I'm sure the reply was meant to be helpful, not judgmental. This topic is so popular, that it has its own page in the tech section: http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/body-and-frame/earlyintermediate-cj-windshield-frame-comparison/ ... complete with pictures.

A couple of other suggestions, if I may. If you don't find what you need, it's ok to post a new question in a new thread. In fact, it's probably better ... your new thread will have a more accurate title that you can pick, and will draw more helpful responses.

If you don't find what you want using the forum search function, try Google. (I skip the forum search altogether generally and go direct to Google search). Use
    site:earlyCJ5.com <your search terms>
and you'll search the whole site. The Google search engine is much more sophisticated than the forum search, and handles those pesky 1, 2 and 3 letter phrases that the forum search throws away.

    hth! :tea:

WOW! once agian this is a timely posting.
I had the idea of making a Meyers hard top into a 1/2 top.
My plan was to find a ratty Meyers without the doors, (my doors are pristine) and cut it up.
But prehaps trying to fit a fibergalss top w/doors from a newer CJ 5 may work also.
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:beer:
Stand by when I get the $$ then the top and start hacking and welding I'll post pics.
