Hi. Ive done the search......no luck. How do you remove the tailgate surround to replace rusty panels underneath and still have a usable surround when you're done.
I removed the toolbox by drilling out about 100 spot welds but i don't want to swiss cheese the surround, any ideas.

    Thanks AJ

Do you have the tub off? Can you get at the backside of the surround to drill through the panels instead of the surround? Only thing I can think of other than a torch.

Ain't no other way that I know of :(.

And it's not just spotwelded either, the pieces are welded to each other in the corners & a few beads layed down to the body here & there. I've done this twice & its a miserable job :(.

When I put Tonka back togeather I'll either get a new surround (cheap, all things considered) or cut up some appropriately sized angle iron (even cheaper but more work)

I replaced the rear floor, wheel wells and tail light panels. The surround was easy to save, it is a heavier metal compared to the body sheet metal. I drilled the spot welds a little and then ground on them. Cut the panels out close to the welded area first, then it is easier to drill and grind the welds. I had my tub in a rotisserie which helped. If you are not building a rotisserie, get the tub up off the ground, the higher the better. What ever you put it on, make sure it is stable for two reasons. First you do not want it to fall on you while working and second after you cut it apart you do not want it to move and have ever thing out of wack. You can not take enough measurements, take a sharpie and write the measurement on the panel. Put marks where you took the measurement from. When cutting out stuff, you will need to brace the area around the tub you cut out. Do not throw the pieces away till you have everything welded up, they are a good reference to look back on.
