I'm having some problems with my prestolite alternator running unregulated overcharging my battery with anything from 13.5volts to 20volts. That makes me think whoever wired up my alternator didn't hook up the regulator properly. I got a Orange, Green, yellow, and black wire coming from the regulator.(see pic)

Curently I the wires are hooked up like this:
    orange-regulator termal on alt.
    green- Brush termal on alt.
    yellow- senseing wire from harness
    black - Ground on alt.

    Is this correct?

From my '74 service manual, here's the connections for the voltage regulator:

Black - Voltage Regulator Ground Terminal on Alt.

Green - Brush Terminal on Alt.

Orange - Connects to 2 gray wires and connects to Regulator Terminal on Alt. & Alternator indicator bulb in dash cluster.

Yellow - Connects to the "I" terminal on starter relay, which also connects to the + terminal on the coil via a green wire.

Might I suggest changing to a one wire alternator? A local alternator shop had no problem supplying me with one that fits the factory bracket & puts out 95 amps. Sure solved my electrical problems & simplified the wiring.

Thanks alot! I tried fitting a GM one wire on mine but it didn't fit my bracket. What is yours like, is it a big "C" that is on the lower Driverside?

Its still running unregulated  , i think my problem is now resistance in the wireing or a bad regulator. I'm going to take it by the alternator shop monday and have them check it out. Thanks again for your help.

Yeah, my alternator looks like the GM one, but the lower mounting ear is narrower, allowing it to fit in the original bracket. You could probably grind down a GM one to fit, if you hit a dead end.
