Going to look at this tomorrow. I know early CJ's, but I'm not completely up to snuff on intermediates. As you can see from the ad, it's being sold as an "original survivor", owned by the same family, etc. I talked to the guy today and he seemed genuine. I'm curious if you guys see anything that isn't original or anything that jumps out. I honestly wasn't looking for an old Jeep at ALL. But I just can't look past this one. I guess I'm a sucker for "original" and patina.

I don't have the VIN right now, but I'll see it tomorrow. Is there a certain digit that tells if the 304 is original?

    I thought a '74 would have a tailgate?

And I love the slotted mags, but those look really wide. The tires are 33x12.50's (which would be the first thing to go) and judging by that, the wheels look like they might be 10" wide instead of 7"?

    I'm digging the factory paint...

    "H" indicates 304.

All the 304 CJs in that era were 3-speeds, the T-15. There should be a tag on the front of the right side valve cover, with a build date that matches the rest of the Jeep. Look here http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/1B-V8Engines.pdf - there's a complete manual there too.

Starting in '73, the solid back panel was a factory option.

The 2100 gets dry bowl pretty bad, so they may have had the air cleaner off because they are continually needing to prime it. See if they have it, and get it if you can.

It's not loaded - it could have had power brakes. Chrome wiper motor cover included :driving:

Thanks Tim. I was hoping you would chime in. I'm really digging the original paint too - that's what caught my eye.

The engine has been rebuilt once, so I'm not sure that the tag will still be on the valve cover. Is there a digit in the VIN that indicates a V8?

Look pretty good. Is it missing the pass. seat or am I just not seeing it ? Price seems good. I like it.

Oh, okay - thanks. Now I see what you're saying. I thought the 'H' would only be on the engine tag.

The guy emailed me a bunch of pictures today. I'll try to post up a few more.

That last pic is where it looks like the wheels are more than 7" wide?

From the little i can see, those wheels look like they are 10 inches wide. My 33x12.50's don't look nearly that wide.

Looking again at the ad, the wheels are not "renegade slots". They are too deep and the lugs are not centered to the "D" slot.

Nice looking Jeep! It is a good thing I am far away from it as I would like to have it in my yard.

VERY cool. Intermediates are my personal favorites. D44 flanged rear, power steering and the original "jeep looking" windshield. To me the intermidates look like jeep a jeep should look, inside and out....but are happy going 65-70 mph down the highway. That one is basically rust free. Nice find, good luck.

Looks as if the heater has been bypassed, also missing the heater controls under dash. I'm not seeing a evaporation canister either. But I'm just being nitt picky. Beautiful jeep, tons of potential for "all original".

Looked at it this afternoon and decided to pass. It's pretty much just like the seller said, but it didn't run very well. Just like Tim said - it was incredibly cold-natured. Even after driving it around the block twice, it would stumble and die on the slightest hill. I know that could probably be fixed, but it was a good ways from being a "runner". No turn signals, no brake lights, wipers didn't work. Overall, I was looking for something that I was more road-ready.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

Sounds like all minor stuff to me. I would rather have to deal with all those issues and have a clean rust free Jeep than have to deal with body work and rust repair again. Was he willing to negotiate on the price? Humm.....I wonder If my worn out old truck could pull a trailer that far and not blow up the engine or trans?

I have a 75, pretty much the same thing. To me the tires look like 31X10.50's. I have the same slotted rims on mine or at ;east they look the same. Hard to tell from a photo. . They are 15X8" as far as I know.. When I had the 2100 on mine it was extremely cold blooded.. Once the engine warmed up it was all right.. The one in the photo still has the factory seat brackets in the rear.. IMO $4750 is high. Around here $4000 would be more in line.

Regardless of its issues, I kinda like it. I think I'd be really happy with a price around $2500 to maybe $3000.

I would tally up all the issues and subtract something from the price for each. This stuff can add up fast. Then take the tally sheet to the owner and make an offer from the total. You could cite things like no back seat, front seats replaced, tear in the front seat, (they'll need to be recovered), missing engine parts, missing emissions equipment, missing rear tire carrier, apparent repairs to the rear panel, no matching spare tire, poor runner, etc. etc. Look close at the frame for cracks.

For $4750 I'd expect it to run and drive well. And all the safety items like wipers and lights should work - this affects the sale price a lot. If the owner can't or doesn't care to fix important stuff like that, I get the impression they want to dump it... or somebody dumped it and they are trying to flip it. Come at them with your laundry list of issues.
