Have serial Number but don't know what year...Help

Need a little help I just purchased a CJ5 jeep with a serial number
J6M83EA096345
person I bought it from says is is a 1976

I think he has the numbers turns around it look more like a 1967

It has a 4 cyl. 4-speed 4 x 4 completely stock,
with a steel cab which has a sticker plate Jeep Special Equipment

any help would be appreciated

That serial number doesn't match any type of number on a 71 or older Kaiser or Willys design. Does this Jeep have a saginaw steering box mounted right behind the bumper?
What does the steering column and dash look like?

Pics would tell the story, preferably a side pic.
This does sound like a 75 or 76 model from that serial number.

Yes It does have the saginaw steering blox right behind the bumper

I doulbled checked the serical number on the ID tag to the left of the steering column its correct

Steering cloumn goes through the dash ignition switch is mounted on column with 4-ways Speedo in the mddle of dash with amp & oil to the right between the speedo & glove box

to the left of th speedo there are 4-switches runing vertical
fan, defrost, heat & air

it is equipt with a PTO

This is definately not a 67, it truly is an AMC jeep of the mid 70's era.
The PTO is not a normal function of a Jeep in this year range. Crawl under this thing and look at the PTO. Is your rear driveshaft centered or is it offset. The PTO was available for the dana 20 transfercase but from what I understand is rare compared to the PTO on an offset dana 18 transfercase.

 

J6M83EAXXXXX Is a 1976 Jeep CJ5, J6=1976. M= 4 speed transmission. 83=CJ5. E=GVW of 4150 Lbs. A=258 engine w/one barrel carb. Rest of number is serial #.

Are you sure that you have a 4 cylinder engine and not the I-6?

That would have told us it was a 72 or later right off the bat as 71 and earlier never came with a straight 6 in them from the factory and without modifications it won't fit.
