So I have decided to put a lock right in the stock Dana 44 with 5.38 gears in my CJ5. I've been reading up on how to install them I see that I'm going to need to pull the carrier out. Am I going to have to remove the ring gear in order the get the cross pin out? If so should I replace the ring gear bolts or reusing the old ok and are they right or left and threaded?

Ok thanks and also how durable are the factory cross shafts and thrust washers? Are those items I should replace because of age?

I would replace with a hardened shaft. I also bought new thrust washers. They're cheap and I didn't want to wait for parts after I started the job.

Mine didnt I paid $150 for it. It is new and has never been used. So the parts that I posted will work? I guess all Dana 44 cross pins shafts and side gear thrust bearings are the same? This doesn't look like a hard job I just want to make sure I get all the parts I need before taking it apart. I'll post some pic from the install maybe even a video

10 and 19 spline side gear thrust washers are one size and 27 and 30 spine side gears are a different size.

Ok well I haven't made alot of progress I had to find a heavy duty hub puller so I can separate the two piece axles. So I could get to the backing plate bolts is it possible to remove the axle shafts with out taking the brake backing plates off? Or is it possible to take the backing plates off and hang them from the tub and not take the brake lines off?
