Yesterday the '5 made a pop while accelerating and quit on me about a half mile from the house. I coasted her to the shoulder and tried to restart her. Nothin' doing. The better half brought my truck down, and I flat towed the '5 home ( trans and xfer in neutral).

Tested the coil at home and it tested bad. Replaced it and the jeep fired right up. Dropped her off the tow bar to put her in the garage only to find she would not motivate. The xfer case seems fine, and it seems to go into all positions. The trans seems to work through the gears, but when I place it in gear, there is no resistance. She rolls just as if she were in neutral.

I pulled the trans cover and there is no obvious damage.

Anyone have an idea where to start trouble shooting this one?

Tranny in gear, T-case in Neutral for flat-towing. Good thing you kept it short.

Start simple. Check for spark, then fuel, then valvetrain (air).

She runs no problem - she will just not motivate.

According to the 1969 owner's manual both trans and xfer are to be in neutral for towing (page 32).

Tried it in 4-wheel drive? If it works, then your trouble is in the rear end. Otherwise i would double-double check that the transfer case shift lever and linkage is truly putting it in drive.

Just trust us on this, based on experience, nearly cooked my trans on the way to Calico doing that.
Lets skip a flat towing discussion here.:dead horse:

    Are the driveshafts turning?

The drive shafts are not turning in 2H, 4H or 4L, however the transfer does engage.

Single lever t-case shifter? Any chance the shifter linkage is messed up? Output gear come off of the transmission? Any kind of weird noise when it quit running?

I was going to mention pulling the cover on the back of the TC to see if the bull gear is still on the shaft.

Can you feel any difference in the vibation transmitted through the shifter cane when the motor is running and clutch is depressed and released? Assuming has floor shifter.

X3 on the gear coming off the output shaft, in the transfer case.

The xfer shift linkage was what I checked first. It is a single lever. The "pivot bar" (not sure what to call it) was disconnected on one end. I reconnected, and the xfer case seems to shift normally.

My next step I guess is to pull the plate on the xfer case and check the output gear. That will have to wait until next weekend. I did not know those would come off without some help. No noise when it quit running other than a small pop as I was topping a hill under acceleration. It popped once; the engine died and would not restart until I replaced the ignition coil.

No unusual vibration. Trans seems normal, and when I pulled the top cover it looked normal as well.

Hard to believe the coil issue had anything to do with the apparent gap in the drivetrain. I don't think this should be that complicated. I would look at the tcase linkage again and have someone else shift it while you watch to see if the shift rods are both moving correctly. The main drive gear could have come off but I'm not sure there is enough space for it to get clear off without hitting the cover which should make some noise.

YOu could remove the inspection plate on the top of the bell housing. At that point you can see if the clutch is engaging the main drive gear or not. It probably is...

YOu could remove the rear plate on the xfer case and see if it the input gear to xfer is turning. You could put a chalk mark on the bull gear and hit the starter without starting the jeep. You could then crawl under the jeep and see if the chalk mark moved.

If you think that the xfer case is bad, I'd look for xfer shifting problems before I took anything apart. If the xfer was somehow "stuck" in neutral you'd have exactly the problem you describe.

Now, if you have an overdrive you could have cooked the planetary gears during the tow.

    good luck

That was my thought about the coil too. Just an unhappy coincidence.

I pulled the floor pans today so I could see all of the linkages on the xfer from up top. They appear to be working properly.

Pull the five bolts that hold the PTO cover on the back of the Spicer 18 and put the drive gear back in place if the teeth/splines aren't damaged. There is room for it to come back just enough to put the gears out of mesh so you can row without any grinding sound.

Often happens when somebody has assembled it without using a nylock or red Loctite to hold the mainshaft nut on.

Since you said part of the linkage was disconnected I think I would focus on whether the low range rod is moving, or moving enough. Could very well be it's stuck in neutral. ;)
