    Put me on the list-
Oddly enough, Jeep #6 for me just happens to be a 72 CJ6 w/ a Meyers hardtop. No engine but I have a 304 out of my CJ7 project that'll go right in. It originally came with a 304 according to the VIN so its going back to some semblance of originality. Plans are to get it running with what parts I have and then see what happens. I'm a huge truck 4 speed fan so if I keep it theres a 435 in its future.:) Its an Arizona Jeep so the floors are really amazing, and the gas tank skidplate doesn't have as much as a nick in it.
I need an alternator bracket for a 304 to make it run if anybody has one...

    sgogpn,
    Mike

Sorry guys, got so engrossed in the story I didn't notice that i'd posted in the wrong thread.:-(

    Beautiful transformation on your 6...

    Mike

Well, I did back it out of the garage this weekend and let it run for an hour or so. Not much to report. I have been busy with selling the 65 and the holidays. I returned from St. Louis and decided to start back with this project. I would like to keep it but may sell it also. I made a list and looked over a few things to see where I left off. Still need to make the heater delete plate, reroute the fuel line, replace or repair the rear diff, brakes, and so on. I did take these two photos since it was sunny out. Thanks for checking on me...

How did the sale go with the '65?

was it someone local, or a sight unseen purchase?

Either way, it is going to make the new owner a really nice '5!

The '6 is looking great in these pics!

Have you made any other progress on it?

I saw the thread where you are selling the soft-top for it.

    Again, its looking great!

I sold the 65 to a guy in North TX and he painted the fender and resold it to a guy in Ft. Wayne, IN. The sale went ok but you never get what you think you ought to when you sell. Your labor never counts. HA.

I am tackling the last of two minor projects to get ready for the July 4th parade. The pinion bearing is worn and the yoke moves up and down quite a bit. I found a differential out of a 69. The seller and I did all the tricks to guess at the gear ratio. So thinking I had the right one I bought it and brought it home. I opened it up to find it was a 4.88 and not a 3.73. So I trekked off to OK and bought the right one this time. So far I have the old one out and am about ready to put the new one in. I will be posting the worn out one and the one with the 4.88 gears in the classified soon. Here are a couple of shots of the fun.

[IMG][IMG]More in a few days. Then on to the front hubs and brakes. No problems there other than it's due.

Installed the rear diff today. These HF dollys work well for moving the rear end around the garage.

Now on to the brakes and brake lines.

Small update as I organize some of my photos. I was able to replace all the brakes, wheel cylinders and repack the front wheel bearings (replaced LF). Changed the front diff fluid. It was black glop and was over filled by quite a bit. Looked a bit like cottage cheese. After cleaning all that out the gears were in great shape. Didn't take photos of the brakes as they look just like any other 10" brakes.

On the initial test run the brakes took a bit to seat in but now they work as expected. I had a miss that had not been there before. Did some research on the miss and guessed a stuck valve. Found the fouled plug, removed the valve cover and soaked the offending valves with PB Blaster. After letting it work a few days I closed it up and the miss was gone. I changed the oil and added Seafoam to do a little cleaning. It blackened the oil pretty quick. I have driven it about 50 miles and am getting ready to change it again.

The Jeep drives and runs better than I thought it would. It is the first time I have driven in a CJ6 and all I can say is it is the same as a Cj5 but a little different. It does not seem to turn as sharp but who knows. It does make you :) when you go down the road after working on it so long.

Next on the list is seal up the transfer case cover and replace the knuckle seals. I also want to replace the valve cover gaskets after opening one side up for the stuck valve.

I also rememberd a couple of detail items I did above ground. Painted my JEEP on both sides. It was much easier than I thought it would be and looks great at 6'. I also put on a clutch pedal pad and shift knob.

This weekend I replaced the knuckle seals. That was easier than I thought it would be. I also drained the transmission and transfer case. Milky brown in both and again the gears looked good. I refilled everything and took it for a drive. Stopped for gas and the transsfer case was drip drip dripping. Crushed of course but took it back home and decided I had had enough and was going to sell. I just didn't want to mess with it any longer.

After supper I began to think about the leak and went out in the garage and man the puddle was big. I thought something funny here. So I traced the leak to the speedometer cable on the transfer case. I guess the old fluid was BLL (below leak level). When refilled it was ALL (above leak level) causing the oil to run.

Search turned up solutions such as o ring, new speedo gear, rtv and so on. I did not work on it last night. Hope to fix it tomorrow evening.

Oh yeah. I guess I will keep the Jeep for another week or so.;)

Not digging the seat covers, but I love everything else!

It's a Jeep, you have to expect leaks, that way, if it ever stops, you'll have to sell it, 'cause somethings wrong!

Thanks. My wife reupholstered the seats using fabric from my BDU's. My grandkids really like them. I think it is more sentimental to me than anything else. Some folks don't like the OD paint but it was something I always wanted to try.

Wow, nice old 6. You folks without salt, count your blessings. I love the snow up here, but I hate the damn salt monster.

Found a body extender for sale on the Hope, AR CL. Picked it up Thanksgiving and installed it over the weekend. I still need to replace the braces which were missing. It feels pretty solid without it but the manufacturer must have had a reason to design it that way. The instructions and photos I have seen on the CJ3B page show them to be round like maybe 3/4" conduit. That's what I am going to try. The hinges for the tail gate are pretty much gone. I have a pair on the way to replace what's there.
It's kind of a neat accessory but I can already see why the guy sold it. He said you use it once in a while and then fall over it in the garage when it's not on the Jeep.

I like the fact you also use the antique plates, No inspection, no stickers, only one plate. Antique insurance in nice also!

It's convenient that the plates are five year plates and IIRC it is $10 per year for registration. Wish the vehicle on the plate was a Jeep!

Very sharp!! You've done a nice (even great) job indeed!
But I admit I'm not a fan of those body extenders.
The spare tire would do well on a simple swing-a-way tire mount to the back bumper or a side mount.

I made some brackets to mount the back seat. The seat was gray when I bought it. I used Duplicolor interior spray to make it black. I was a bit skeptical of the product. I watched the youtube videos of folks using it. It is everything they say it is. It made the seat look new. The only thing it didn't cover were the tears in the seat. Very smooth, applied well, looks like it came that way from the factory. It is very durable. the only issues so far are scuffs where I scooted the seat on the concrete.

I like the pipe idea for mounting the seat. Did you do that so you can adjust height? The seat looks a lot better black. Nice 6.

Thanks. I never considered adjustment on the seat height. I just stood in the plumbing aisle at home depot and bought what they had pre cut that looked about the same as the factory brackets. I turned out better than I expected. More pictures soon.
