I will be off for a few months soon and want to complete my power steering conversion to my 1971 CJ-6 w/225 Dauntless. I plan on using my stock steering column. I will be going to the junk yards to get p/s box (saginaw) with hoses and pump. I have a pump bracket and double groove pulley from a early (late 60's)buick 350. I will also look for a rear dump 231 exhaust mainfold or get headers. I have a list of vehicle/year models for the parts Im looking for. Here are my questions.
#1 What part will I need to weld to the end of my stock steering shaft?
#2 What parts will I need to connect the end of my steering shaft to the steering box?
I plan on getting the parts that McRuff makes/sells which looks like a spud shaft extension and the saginaw mount components. I plan on running the shaft under the crossmember.
If anyone has contact info for McRuff it would be helpfull. I cant PM for some reason. Thanks in advance.

I recall welding is not the usual route. Instead, most swap in a postal Jeep column, a GM column, or an aftermarket column. Welding a steering shaft (or any steering components) is considered a bad idea, and may not be legal in your state.

You arent going to get a ton of responses because you have asked the third most common question after flat towing and knuckle lube...use the search function and if you spend less than three hours reading you havent hit all of the topics. Have you noted the entire sticky thats 18 pages long dedicated to just power steering swaps? Also each one is different and sometimes you just have to jump in and get your hands dirty

This is a volunteer run site, frequented by enthusiasts. Patience is a virtue. You won't always get the answers right away. This type of attitude frankly turns people away from wanting to help. The folks here are friendly and want to help, but just because it doesn't happen on YOUR time frame is no reason to be rude.

Here's a link to the sticky post Napaguy referred to.

    Good luck.

Uh, ya - being a newbie, I'll cut you a little slack this time. This place is not like Pirate or alot of other places. Folks do care and help when they can.

For my part, it sounded like you knew what you were going to do, and my process wouldn't fit with what your looking for. My process and pics are noted in the build thread above and I have a process that I can do in @ weekend start to finish. Mine involves a replacement column (can't say when the last time I used a stock one was), 1" DD shaft and knuckles from Summit, my own boxing on the front, replacing the crossmember or notching (depending on the engine setup and mounts), plate and spud from McRuff to the box, hoses from a local hydro shop...

Talked to McRuff last night - you have been given the path to get to him if he is available.

I was told that power steering is not possible with the dauntless because of the manifold getting in the way... Is that true?

Most any car with a Buick 231 or 252 that is non turbo. Buick Apollo, Regal, Skyhawk, Chev Monza, some Camaro's and El Camino's. just be careful to not get one with dual outputs for crossover exhaust.
Might also put a wtb ad in the Classifieds.

I was talking more about on here but by all means put an ad on Craigslist as well. Never know what you will find.

I apologize for for wanting fast answers. I am new to site but need lots of you guys to help. I did contact McRuff for parts for power steering conversion. I was planning on doing an auto trans conversion also. I ended up buying a th 400 to buick 350. I heard dauntless and thought it was for my 225 not the 350. Again I apologize and this site and the persons that make this site are the invaluable.
