starter to flywheel

I need a starter for my 66 cj5, with the buick v6. Im pretty sure I can use a starter off of an early buick v6 or v8,(correct me if I'm wrong) but how do i make sure that it'll fit my jeep flywheel? Do different models have different numbers of teeth? I bought it over a year ago and its just sitting on the side of the house. Its getting time to start doing something with it. Thanks for any help.

Basically, a starter from a GM 250 engine will work (late 60's-early 70's).

 

Which starter is the correct one- the one that bolts to the engine block or the one that bolts to the bell housing?
I need to import a starter from the USA to South Africa and I cannot afford to order the wrong one.

The 225 starter bolts to the engine block.

 

I would think the chevy starters should be pretty easy to find in South Africa (could be wrong) so the main change in the GM starter for the 225V6 is the drive end housing. A very large variety of the small block Delco starters are a direct bolt up to the GM 225 drive end housing. The armature shaft size was the same through-out and so was the stick-out which means you could change the barrel/armature from a Cadillac starter and put the 225 bendix on it with the 225 drive end housing and bolt it on.

 

So, are the Holden starters the same as the American GM starters?

 

Unfortunately the Chevy starters are also getting very scarce in South Africa.
Which starter (part #) would you recommend and from which supplier?

Secondly, what is wrong with your existing starter, do you have one?

I don't have a starter. I only have the engine (4.1 Buick) without bell housing, flywheel or starter. The PO wanted more power and swopped the engine for a V8.
