So i had this 88 K5 blazer that has electrical issues and i have not even touched it in 6 months. A co-worker has a built toyota and his old boss just GAVE him this 1965 CJ5 but he doesnt want a second wheeler and needs something fullsize to get his kids hauled while playing.

    SOOO here i am minus a K5, and plus a CJ5. i must like the 65 because i also have a 1965 CJ6 tuxedo.

Just from a quick 5 minute look i can tell it has a newer CJ5 frame (grill mount doesnt line up, front body mount doesnt line up, hanging pedals, power steering box, and gas tank between the frame), 44 rear, 30 front, im told its a AMC 360 (edit engine is a 304), unknown trans or case right now (T15 trans, dana 20 case)

    what NEEDS done

    radiator installed or replaced
    wiring replaced or fixed
    fuel lines hooked up
    steering column bolted up
    find a top
    mount the grill
plug lines from power steering box or hook up power steering

    now the pics

Definitely an intermediate frame. Looks like a solid start though, good trade

Take a look toward the lower drivers side of the block. Should be a casting # 304,360, or 401. I don't think a cj ever came with a 360 from the factory. Although some were installed at dealerships per request of the buyer.

just went out and checked the engine, its a 304. which really makes more sense anyways. so i have the drivetrain narrowed down to a 72-75, pretty close for just narrowing it down and not knowing

Intermediate frames have the VIN stamped into the top of the passenger side frame. In your second picture, the last of the numbers should be visible under the passenger fender ending right near the brake line hole (you might have to clean it up a bit to actually see the numbers). Several people have posted VIN decoders on this site. IIRC, the second number tells you the year (e.g. the first two digits on my '72's VIN are "J" "2" -- the "2" I stands for 1972.

EDIT: your third pic, not thew second....sorry

From what it looks like, somebody took an intermediate cj5 and threw an early cj5 body on top of it. Barring any issues with the title and/or VIN, you could source an intermediate tub/fenders/hood and make it fit proper. Depending on how far into a restoration you want to go, I would recommend buying a second intermediate cj5 to use for parts. Thats what I did and have saved a considerable amount of money, and even made money selling other parts that I didn't need off of it.

this weekend im planning on pulling the tub and pressure washing the whole chassis at work, clean a couple un-used brackets off the frame, run some wires and lines for the fuel tank.

i found an intermediate hood for $25, i just have to find a way to go get it. ill build tube fenders for the front fenders to reach the intermediate hood. theres a little work needed on the floor and the back of the tub, but other than that its not bad (nowhere near as bad as my CJ6). other than that right now the plans are just to get it up and running/driving and try to find a top and doors.

i moved to rock springs in february and most of my tools (plasma, welder, tubing bender) are in my dads shop in oregon until i can find a place with a shop here.

I have found, when I have the time, I don't have the money. When I have the money, I don't have the time.
