Rear Main

I was Told to ask about my oil leak here.I got a M38a1 that had not run in some time. when I got it started Rear main seal leaked so i replaced it bearings looked good. I started driveing it and RMS steal leaks. I have a cj2a It had O miles on rebuilt engine when i got it it leaked i replace it and it leaked so I drove it and years later replaced it agin and it dryed up. The 2 RMS on 2a looked like it had only touched in center of seal. Has some one had this problem?

 

It could be that where the seal comes in contact with the crank is worn

 

As you know i have my engine out replaceing clutch. I was talking to a buddy about oil leak he said a rope seal would fix oil leak what do you think?

 

Did you use the rubber seal?

I recall that Walck's (? - nope - see the first thread in the link I posted above) had rubber RMSs made that are of higher quality than the usual import RMSs. The rope seals are ok, more modern rubber (neoprene?) seals are considered better. Rope seals are kinda hard to install with the engine in the car.

 

I put a rope seal and it is as bad as ever. I have been doing mechanic work for 30+ years and have replaced a lot of RMS and they allways worked. I am very disapointed. What is the deal? I will drive it Until bad weather and tear it down again.

 

My first seal was rubber.Second seal was rubber. third is rope.

 

Hey Doug, As an aircraft mechanic of 25+ years, I am begining to wonder if it is the Rear Main Seal (RMS) that is leaking. Could it be perhaps the "freeze plug" in the aft end of the camshaft bore? I have a hard time believing that a mechanic with your experiance would have, and install three bad Main Seals. I also do not think that you would miss a bad seal area on the CrankShaft (CS), at least not three times. If it is not the Cam Bore plug The what else is on or near the rear of the block that could leak? Look around, I doubt that the RMS is your problem. I could be wrong here, I have been in the past. I have thought a lot about it and the oil could be comeing from some were besides the RMS. When i pull it back out i will borrow a buddeys test stand and run it out of the jeep to see were it is leaking. I want to start on another jeep. But need to fix this ones oil leak first.

 

Rocker arm cover leaking in the back can give the illusion of a rear main seal leaking. Have you verified it's engine oil and not transmission fluid that's leaking?

Oil is comeing out of bell houseing plug. I could presureize engine with a air over oil tank.
