Early (first 6000 or so) 1955 CJ-5...There is an extra threaded hole on the drivers side, in the outboard top of the sill where the seat bolts on. It still has paint in it. The seat has it's own three unthreaded holes that are in front of the unused threaded hole.....

Was this hole for a different seat mount? M-38A1 maybe?

    No picture yet....

Believe there was one in the same position on the '47 CJ2A I used to drive. Thought they were for adjusting the seat frame (and seat) back and forth so some of the longer legged GI's could fit in the seat ... kinda.

When I get a chance I'll take a look and see if there is one in The '60 CJ5 out front.

I agree it is probably for the seat, but it would have to be a different style seat frame as this seat will not go back any further without hitting the wheel well. The seats are original, one piece frame, upholstered back.

I'm guessing that it is a holdover from a previous model or the same tub was used for a concurrent model, like the M38A1....The passenger side has the usual tip-up seat, with the hinge points in the more aft location, yet the plugged holes are still there for the early single bolt hinge points...

I have a set of seats out of a m38a1 that use that hole for mounting. Although in my 69 cj5 it was just drilled out no threads.

    written on my kindle.

Here is a pic from my 62, the bolt holds a bracket with 3 threaded holes for seat adjustment. I would say the hole that does not go clear thru is a carry over from the military years.

Thanks everyone, that must be it then....a holdover from the M-38A1.....one site said that the M38a1 was produced until 1957....so I bet they just used the same tubs...interesting that Jason has a nut plate behind the seat mount holes..that would sure make mounting the seat easier!

Old thread, I know. But I just checked my '57 CJ5 against my '52 M38A1.

The rearmost hole is the ONLY hole on the military, and mounts the seat. Seems to have a nut-plate.

On the CJ it is blind, and the three other forward holes are for the seat mounting.

Thanks Pete.....do the three forward holes have a threaded nut plate? Mine are just holes...
