My transmission has been giving trouble going into first gear, put in gear and it sorta chatters or grinds. I push it back into neutral, pull back sharply on the shifter and most times it will be engaged ok. No problems with reverse or 2nd or 3rd. I pulled the top off and the forks and shifter look fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like a shifter top/detent issue. Double check the shift forks for wear as well. Worn bearings or a loose mainshaft nut can cause similar issues as well.
I'd take the shifter top off and shift the top through all the gears. They should be very crisp in each position.

I have already had the top cover off, forks and all look good. When I move the sliding gear foward it seem like the rest of the gear assembly on the mainshaft has too much slackand the gear can't engage the brass rings like it should. It could just be a loose nut on the back of the mainshaft but if I pull the transfer case off, I'll just do a rebuild I think. Thanks for the reply.
