you have to drop the bottom set of gears to get the top ones to come out, tap the bottom shaft out enough to get the metel keeper out of the endd then drive it all the way out. The cluster gear will fall down giveing you enough room to get the input shaft out by gently tapping. Then the same with the output bearing/ flange taps right out.

piffey if you are asking about the pilot bushing in the crank shaft, fill the id of the bushing with some grease, the take a round piece of metal rod almost the same size (a little smaller) as the id of the bushing. tap on the metal with a hammer to create hydraulic pressure on the grease you filled the bushing with. the hydraulic force will push the bushing out.

I can't seem to find the t86 stamp on the transmission, but i don't have the two bolts on the front for the oil galley? like the t90.
the jeep is a 66 with the buick and would make sense to have the t86. I did pull off a serial number but I can't find a source to confirm what it is.

yes I agree that's a good site and as for tapping out the keeper and those pins it works first gear dropped I got to run get a dowl that long enough to finish tapping out second pin.

Me thinks you have a T14. It's got a 10 spline rear output right?

    13-02 = T14.

First time to this thread, and I scrolled down and saw three blocking rings and thought "T-14" ... but you beat me to it! :tea:

well guess that explains allot.... atleast i can get a complete rebuild kit for cheaper :) I always thought the t-14 was 67 and up not 66
might explain why I can downshift into first gear with no problems.

I imagine they come apart the same way?

and thanks homersdog I will try that with the grease

Pretty much. The T-14 was used in CJs through 1975, so you can look at the '72 factory manual at www.trailforge.com or at the '74 manual at www.oljeep.com

AFAIK they are a bolt-in replacement for the T-86, so somebody could have been in there before you and replaced your T-86. Or you could really have a '68. In any case, it's a good thing.

You can also slide-hammer it out. Make a slide hammer from a piece of threaded rod, a couple of nuts and a weight of some kind. Or get a cheap slide hammer from Harbor Freight.

    Here's a fancy one: http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/285293-homemade-slide-hammer-pilot-bearing-removal.html

    Here's a commercial puller: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/removing-pilot-bushing-bearing-removal-tool-753077/

The grease and dowel method works better than any tool does. In my humble opinion:)
