I went to switch the differential fluid today in my 70 CJ5, when i was filling it back up it started to leak. I would call it the rear of the axle, the side where the drive shaft connects to the axle. The part that comes out of the axle housing, it started to leak there today. My question is what is this? and how do you fix it?
    Any help would be great
    Thank You
    Mitchell

remove drive shaft, remove pinion nut, remove pinion seal with seal puller, install new seal using old one to drive it in square, install and torque pinion nut to spec and the rest is reverse of disassemble.

removing the pinion nut is the fun part. You might want to research that technique here on this site.

Can you post a picture just to be sure we are all talking about the same thing? Really not many more places go leak but it might clarify things a bit and we could give you better advice. Its strange that it didn't leak before you changed oil?

If it wasn't leaking before with the old fluid, why is it leaking now?

A fluid change is simply loosening the cover bolts and letting the fluid drain out. Right? Or inserting a tube in the fill hole and siphoning it out. Or am I completely wet on this?

It may have been low and not reaching the seal area before. I know mine will leak for a while after I change it or over fill it.
