I am rebuilding my 66. I am curious about what headers you are using? The PO has basterized the headers running out thur the wheelwells and I am wanting to get another set of headers to go down instead of out.

He also did some crazy s*&t with the power steering unit. What power steering unit did use?

I am using the stock manifold on the passenger side and the manifold off of a 231 on the drivers side. I wanted to keep it as quiet as possible and I also wanted to run a single pipe out the back and not dual pipes in front of the tire.

I am not 100% sure where the power steering unit came from. I think it was off of a CJ7. I haven't gotten a pump or the bracket yet, so I only have the box mounted.

I am having the front driveshaft redone. Since I don't have my 27 anymore, does anyone know the difference in the differential length from the 27 to a 30? I am wondering if I need to have the driveshaft shortened at all or if it just needs a new slip yoke.

I had to make my front driveshaft longer (about 1.5")...You should change the yoke at the diff and the transfer case, it is the same size as the rear end (D44). The D30 yokes are bigger and stronger than the D27, which means better u-joints. Plus all the u-joints on the jeep are the same, one size for spares. Also keep in mind that the caster angle changes as you switch from a D27 to D30, most guys including myself have to add a shim to correct the caster. Most people change the shock mount location as well. Lots to consider when doing the D30 conversion.

Ok cool. It seems that the yoke at the transfer case is already the same size as the 44. Could be that a PO changed it at some point.

Does anyone know where to get the plug for the breather tube? I want to run a hose up into the engine bay, but can't find the threadless plug for the differential.

Also, I am trying to figure out my exhaust situation. I think for the time being because of money constraints I am going to use a section of that flexible tubing. Has any one had luck with this stuff? It feels cheap, but I am hoping it works fairly well until I can figure out the angles and have some tubing bent up.

    Thanks

I was planning on getting a barb to barb fitting for the D30 to make a breather tube at my local hardware store. But as i was driving home and looking at the Sap lines wondering how the season is going, I had a stroke of genius. My family owns and operates a small Maple Syrup operation, but since my folks are moving and the weather was all sorts of messed up, we aren't doing it this year. BUT we have tons of supplies for tapping trees. We even have some barb to barb couplers for 3/8" ID line. So I went and took a quick look in one of the supply bins and sure enough there was a couple sitting right on top that we picked up at a tradeshow at some point. Did a quick fit on the axle housing and it fits.

It is plastic, but it is made with a newer blend of plastic that doesn't allow bacteria to grow or transfer from the tubing back to the tree, so I got that going for me.

    Here are my two options:

I will then put sap line on the other end and run that up into the engine compartment with another sap fitting that has a built in check valve. At some point I want to use my jeep with a military trailer to go and collect the sap, so that would be a cool story for when we give a tour. How sugaring equipment can be used for automotive purposes. HAHA

I rolled my jeep on Saturday!!

It made its first appearance with the sun in 7 years. I was so excited. I was able to finish the electrical stuff on the dash. I am using a cluster from a 75ish jeep. On that there is a Ebrake and 4 wheel drive light. Any thoughts on rigging up the electrical side for those?

I was going to try the flexy exhaust, but it won't bend tight enough for what I want to do, so I am back to square one.

I will try to get some pictures up of the jeep out of its natural habitat(the garage).

Ok, So a quick update on what I have done so far.

Exhaust is finished. I had a custom Y Pipe made for the dual rear dump manifolds.
Fenders, Grill, and Hood are back on and aligned.
Electrical is all set (for the most part).
Disc's are on, and just got in some 7/16"-24 banjo bolts, so I will finish the fluids tonight.

The only issues thus far are:

    1. Leaky radiator (I think it is a bad hose)
    2. Engine cranks, but no spark that I can see
    3. Carb still leaks gas out of the gaskets.

The carb leaked after I rebuilt it in 2004, so i probably messed something up. I need to rebuild it again.

I can't figure out the no spark issue. I double checked the wiring and that looks good. I cleaned the points off a bit as well as the tab under the cap. The cap was brand new in '04 and has been in a garage since. I don't think its the coil, as that was new too. I have a feeling it is something really simple, but I can't figure it out.

Any thoughts? I would accept any ideas. Then I will make a checklist out of them and go through the jeep. I think I looked at everything, but am sure I missed something. I also lost the spark plug socket, so I didn't pull those, but the plugs are new and just wanted to pull to check for spark there. I just pulled the plug wire off and looked for an arc.

Check to make sure positive wire to coil is hot with the key on. Then re-check to make sure it's hot when you crank the engine. Common error is to hook the hot wire from the ignition key to a terminal that is dead when cranking. Don't ask me how I know.

There is power when its on, but I will check it when its cranking. I just need to find an extra set of hands.

Ok, I checked that and I am have power in both start and run mode.

I also ran a jumper cable from two points on the block to the frame and batter to make sure I was grounded. The ground strap from my block to my frame is old, so I wanted to make sure that wasn't the culprit.

I have put in new points, condenser, and coil and still no luck. I am having my uncle come over to take a look tomorrow evening. He is a genius with this stuff.

Come to find out, the jeep won't start if the condenser strap isn't hooked to the points. DOH!

Once we fixed that, it started right away, it ran really well too.

I did also have the ignition wired incorrectly, so when I pulled out the key, the jeep kept running. I wish I had a camera because the look on my face, I'm sure, was priceless. The accesory wire was on the ignition side, so the current stayed open. That is now fixed.

SO, not only does my Jeep start, but it turns off too!

Today I will install my custom brake hoses that I had made by Custom Racing Hoses. He wasn't that much money, they are teflon braided hose, and his turnaround time was 24 hrs. It would have been sooner, but I dropped them off at his day job then he did them after work and I then picked them up the next morning.

He does have a van that is outfitted to do brake, fuel, steering, coolant, and any other hose you can think of, on site. Super nice guy and was informative about what he was going to do and why he does it that way.

Ok, so jeep runs, carb still leaks like a sieve. I am either going to rebuild that carb or purchase a re manufactured one from custom rebuilt carbs.

I finally hooked up the vacuum for the brakes and bled the brakes. When I push the pedal down with the jeep on, I get pressure, but the pedal goes to the floor. Its easy to push and the jeep stopped during my push/roll test. I am wondering if I have a little air in the lines, but they don't seem squishy. Just nothing for a bit while you depress the pedal, then bam! you stop. Is this normal for the vacuum assist?

Also, the jeeps starts up like a dream and runs very nice. The motor is so quiet. I can't wait to get it registered and cruising.

Took the jeep for a spin today! Oh boy its so much fun to drive. I didn't have the clutch set up perfectly at first, so shifting was interesting.

In the seven years I hadn't driven it, I forgot what lever did what for the transfer case. So the first half of the maiden voyage was done in 2-Lo. Then I switch it to 4-Hi, then I looked online and drove it around in 2-Hi.

Now I just need to find the title and get it registered. I also need to figure out the carb becuause it seemed like the fuel was cutting out when I was driving up the hill. It wasn't terrible, but I could feel it just barely.

The new brakes seem to work well and after I adjusted the clutch that worked well too. I didn't have the power steering hooked up, but the Saginaw box alone made a big difference in my opinion. Now I need to go have my cheeks massaged out. They started cramping up because I was smiling so hard.

I am not done working on it yet, but a huge thanks to everyone who helped me out. I will get some pics posted soon.
