Got both the T86AA and DANA 18 cleaned up and painted. I'm ready to bolt them together and have purchased a seal kit from kaiserwillys.com. My question is this,,,, Use just the paper gasket that came with the kit, just RTV sealant, or combination of both??? Thanks.

I use both. Dont get carried away with the RTV, a thin bead is all you need.

I have used Ultra-Black with a paper gasket, Ultra-Black without a paper gasket and Copper Spray with paper gasket all at differant times and with great results. I used the Copper Spray just because I had it on hand at the time. I usually coat the paper gasket with a very fine smear of the Ultra-Black...just enough to say its there. I only put a very fine smear in the middle of the gasket so that when it is comperssed very little of would get squished to the edges. In theory the paper gasket should seal by itself but I find that the use of a sealant gives better results, I attribute this to the fact that most of the replacement gaskets are not equal to robust gaskets of days past but rather they are extremely thin paper material.

RTV the bolts. The splines on the output shafts front and back need it also. The black oil resistant RTV and not the red. The red will dissolve in grease/oil.

I recommend using the gasket. The gasket acts as a "shim" and needs to be there. I use Ultra Black RTV or Permatex "The Right Stuff" in a real thin coat. As was said make sure some is used on the bolt threads.

I just got a rebuild kit from Herm's Overdrive up in Washington for my D-18 transfer case and a rebuilt T-86AA with T-90 guts in it. This is what he said to do when mating up the two.

Clean the surface with lighter fluid first. Must be clean.
put a small amount of the the RTV sililcon (black is good) around the outer edges of the gasket covered mated surfaces.

Do not plug the oil distribution flow holes between the two cases with silicon,

be sure to have the gasket clears the area around the bearing and the retainer for the shafts of the transmission.

Use the gasket and use another "Light" coat of RTV silicon on the gasket.

Do not plug the oil distribution flow holes between the two cases with silicon,

Put em together and you should not have any troubles.

Do not plug the oil distribution flow holes between the two cases with silicon,

got the idea yet. anyway that is what Herm said.

He also said that when mating the two up. put the tranmission nose down into a bucket with two 2x4 supposting the tranny. then sit the d-18 down on top of the t-86. he said it would be easier to mate up and less chance of the bearing slipping out of the t-86. hope this helps. or call Herm. he seems to have done this many times over the last 15 ro 20 years.

well im having a problem with my oil going out of the tranny into the t-case. leaving my tranny way too low and my t case way too full. I think there should be a large washer behind the t-case bull gear sort of blocking the bearing that i believe i didnt install. so im going to find one and then ill dig in to check it out. but if i see any holes that i think i should fill with silicone im willing to do it. They both have a vent so i dont see why they need to be totally open to each other. I believe I used rtv and no gasket

those holes that let the two exchange oil might be plug with ATV or with something yo used when assembling the tranny and transferr case.

you may have to pull them apart to see if the oil holes are plugged with something.

I was also told to only use Vasaline to keep stuff in place due to it will disenagreat in tranny oil.

If that were the case the oil would not overfill the transfer case and allow the oil in the transmission to get low. The transfer case sits lower than the transmission.

i also have the same problem with my transfer case being over full and tranny low from the two swapping fluid and like nick said the transfer case is lower so gary gravity takes over. mine is the t-14 trans. i guess it's good being so full like that to lube the overdrive that i have in there but seems like it wants to push out all the seals (leak).
