I am replacing the power steering pump on my 1974 CJ5. While waiting for the new pump to arrive, I pulled the old pump and am trying to remove the pully. There appears to be a 3/8" Hex head bolt holding the pully on, but I cannot budge it. I saw on some other sites that there is no bolt and the pully is just press fitted on.

So does mine have a bolt? If so, anyone have any advice on how to loosen it? ... I assume it is a right hand thread...?

Does the pulley under the bolt have a groove around it? If so someone may have put a bolt in the shaft. The ones with the groove around the "hub" part of the pulley are pressed on and require a pulley puller.

There were some that bolted on but they're few and far between. The pulley has a key slot and the pump input shaft has a woodruff key. Post up a picture, it's pretty easy to tell if it's made that way or if somebody did a little creative engineering. Problem is if it's made that way, your new pump has about a 99.9% chance that it needs an interference fit pulley.

Doesn't look like anyone has "bubbafied" it by adding a bolt. I also see that the center of the shaft is threaded to recieve a pully installer.

Yup. Or buy one. You will need the installer tool as well.

Not sure where you're getting you new pump from, but I got mine from PSC and it was definitely ordered for my model year, but the shaft was the wrong size and no key. I called PSC and they said it wasn't a problem; sent it back to them and they changed out the shaft for the shipping cost. Thought I'd mention it just in case.

Who is PSC?? Not sure I have seen their site. I ordered the first one from Morris 4X4 but it was the wrong one when it arrived so I returned it. The second, I ordered from JCWitney, but it is still in transit. Hopefully, it will fit when it arrives.

Going stock shouldn't be a problem hopefully. PSC Motorsports is where I got mine (pscmotorsports.com)

I hope mine fits when it comes back too. It fits the bracket no problem (304 stock bracket), but the pulley didn't seem as though it would line up if I could have put it on the shaft. They told me the new/correct shaft would resolve the alignement issue also. We'll see!

Well the 3rd power steering pump arrived and is now installed.....finally. The first one I ordered from Morris 4x4 was the wrong one. I knew my system was a later install, so I used the pictures on their website to order.....bad move as the pump did not match the picture. There were happy to send it back and give me a full refund. The 2nd pump was from JCWitney and was close, but had a keyed shaft and nut instead of the press on like my old one.

I finally got smart, and took pictures of my old pump and sent them to Cardone.com. They identified the correct pump and I ended up ordering it off of eBay. Should have done that on day one.....oh well lesson learned.

Back to the subject of the original post, I ended up buying a pulley puller/installer from AutoZone. They really wanted to lend me one, but I like to buy tools so I have them so I bought one for about $30.00. Worked really well. (I did have a small center collar puller from Harbor Fright, but it was useless as it was too weak to keep in alignment)
