Stock rear side marker lights on a 74?

I have been reading through lots of posts and looking at lots of pics and I can't seem to figure out if a 74 CJ6 should have rear side marker lights or not. I have found some that say yes and others that say no.

Can someone here fill me in on what is correct for rear side marker lights on a 74?

I am making a parts list for the rewiring and I want to get as much as I can beforehand. Here are my notes so far (not that they are pertinent to the side marker light question).

I am using a CJ7 tilt column and a later set of pedals. Need to wire to the plug on the column. I have not decided on floor mount or other dimmer switch. I may dash mount it.

I am using the 12 circuit ezwiring.com harness.

I am going to use the Maxxima LED round tail lights with built in backup lights (these fit my existing holes from the PO).

I am going to keep the stock headlights for now but add relays.

I am going to re-use the front clear round marker light and amber side light housings with LED bulbs.

I am going to add lighted license plate bolts.

I will need electronic flashers for the hazards and turn signals due to the LEDs.

The driver side should have a side marker lamp, red. There should be an indent in the tub for this. The passenger side may not have the indent as that is where the spare tire mount was. I "think" there was a light or reflector used in the center of the spare tire mount but maybe Timgr can chime in on this. I know this has been discussed in the past so a search may turn up something.

I believe if you have a solid rear panel (like the Renegade) then the tire was mounted back there and you should have an indent on the passenger side like the one on the driver side for the light. If there is no indent and there is 4 holes there instead, then you had/have a side mount spare. I believe it was just a reflector used instead of a light if that is the case.

I have a fiberglass CJ-6 tub with a tailgate so I have no provision for the spare tire carrier and no indents for the lights. I will just add a nice pair of red lights back there.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

sounds like you can just use two of the stock red side marker lamps.
They mount 5" up from the bottom edge of the tub to the bottom of the housing. Its ~3.-3.25" forward of the back of the tub.

My 73 '5 has no indent on passenger side, but has a light. I also have for holes for a spare carrier, but my carrier is the swing down type on the back and has been as long as dad has had the jeep since 79. My light looks to have been installed through the bottom hole for the side carrier. The other 3 holes have carrier bolts.

When a swing-away was installed, the usual practice (at least where I worked) was to take the reflector from the middle of the original spare tire mount, and move it to the fender. The fender comes with a hole for the harness that's in about the right place for the side marker. You need to enlarge the hole a little bit for the socket on the back of the reflector.

Just confirming what's been reported here - the '74s with a solid back panel would have the rectangular light on both sides, with an indent on both sides. If a tailgate originally, the left side would have an indent and rectangular light, and the right side would have the round lighted reflector in the center of the spare tire and mount. Both sides were lighted, regardless of the equipment. The round reflector/light had a socket for the bulb, just like the rectangular reflector/light, and used the same type bulb.

Here's a pic of mine off my '74. It was screwed to the side tire carrier.

My tub as far as I can tell in a 74. This is the driver's side.

My '75 CJ6 has the rectangle marker on the left side but no indent on the right side. There's a round lighted marker on right side because I have the spare tire mount holes. I've always wondered if someone just put an aftermarket light on it but it sounds like it's supposed to have the round one. My "6" is almost completely stock.
