Likely a dumb question but what type of oil would you put into a 68' CJ5 with the V6? Dad can't even remember the last time the oil was changed so want to get that replaced, new filter, and oil pan seal as that is leaking as well. Also, since it has sat for a while, is there a good addititive to help clean the funk out with the new oil? Thanks.

From an occasional 20 degrees F. up to a rare 90 degrees F. = 10W-30 mineral, not synthetic for mine. Synthetic is probably fine too, I just haven't.

Same here...I use 10W30 (not synthetic). I do add a zinc additive (zddp). I have considered using Shell Rotella that already has the zinc in it (for diesel engines I believe)...

Your typical engine oil has detergent in it already. I wouldn’t do a “flush” on a particularly dirty engine.

Valvoline™ VR1 Racing Motor Oil : Product Catalog - Valvoline
This is what I use in 10-30 form. In California it is not street legal because it still contains Zinc and other "dangerous" materials like ZD DP.
This oil will not restore your worn out camshaft or lifters and you will never feel any HP increases..... It is not recommended for vehicles with catalytic converters.
    • High zinc/phosphorus for anti-wear protection, including push-rod & flat tappet applications
    • Formulated to increase horsepower
    • Enhanced anti-foam system protects engine during extreme stress
    • Recommended for engines burning gasoline and full or partial alcohol fuels
    Valvoline VR1 contains Zinc@1400ppm and phosphorus @1300ppm
Shell Rotella T contains Zinc@1200ppm and phosphorus @1100ppm

I was gonna say go with the VR1 as well. I thought that because it's a "race" oil it wouldn't have any detergents to prevent sludge build up, but Valvoline themselves in the product question section on amazon say it's a full detergent oil.
I'm running rotella but with the changing api ratings who knows how well it still protects, I've also heard some debate on increasing detergent (or something?) levels cleaning off ZDDP but I don't know much.

I usually put in half cheapo 10-30 and half vr1 either 10-30 or 20w50 because i always have a stash for my other cars. Every few years it seems the autoparts stores have a blowout sale on the vr1 a few years ago it was $1. /qt. I went all around and grabbed what i could. The guys on the porsche forum are always all over it like a treasure hunt. One guy found like 60 quarts had them all lined up on his dining room table lol The DELO oil at walmart is suposed to be good too and its cheap. I used it once

I used Driven break in oil for a freshly rebuilt 225 V6. Then I went with Driven HR 10w 30 with zddp.

Walmart Syntec. 10W30 or 10W40. Unless you have a Rural King close by, then I like Harvest King Synthetic.

I wonder if the high zinc oil is really required in these. It seems about half of people say you need it and the other half say it's only required on high performance engines with heavier valve spring pressure. I'm always wondering also about my Wrangler 4.0L I6 engine and zinc.
By limiting yourself to high zinc oil you end up needing expensive specialty oil or oil not intended for spark ignition engines. From everything I've read it sounds like mixing zinc additives into the oil can easily do more harm than good.

If you dig around you find that the only time it is really recommended is during engine break-in with a new cam and lifters. Quaker state Defy had a higher zddp than most. I think it’s Quaker state high mileage oil now. It’s conventional oil.

My engine is garbage and makes valve train noise. It seems to get quieter when I dump in some STP snake oil. Other than that I change the oil one a year that by that time is mostly gasoline with the cheapest 10W40 conventional oil. I do use a WIX filter, so that makes it all ok?
