I always thought you'd be able to fit a bigger tank than the factory one up there, that confirms my suspicion. Do you still have good clearance with that tank? I'd definitely consider something similar if it didn't limit suspension travel.

My pics didn't come out I took for the tanks, used the wife's phone as I'd left mine in charging - I'll see about getting some in the next couple days so you can see.

I run Holbrooks on the Red '51 and more than enough flex. In fact when I went to the Holbrooks I cratered the old 'stock' type of tank with the diff flexing into it. That is what started me down the path of building my own and combined with EFI, it's been the best option.

So here are some pics of the 2 tanks I built and still have here at home.
The first one was on the Red '51

This Shows the top section I extended up high - it 'kinda' works. Gives some extra capacity at the top end, but the fuel usage isn't even :)

The second on the Blue '49

This tank was just square to start. A little taller and I did a cut out to clear the Rear Diff.

Items of note - these are both custom built with 1/8" steel, baffles inside, fittings for EFI (in, out, vent, and gauge). Both had the cross member pulled to fit and a different one put back in that the tank bolts down to. Both tanks can be dropped with a floor jack.

The tank for the '62 build will be close to these. I'm thinking about an in tank pump setup and recessed fittings to make it easier to plumb at the top. I'm also probably going to put a drain plug in the next one. I can pump them out with the EFI Pumps pretty easy, it just might be a better fit on the trail if needed.

Nice! I like them. I love that little top section, that's cool.

If you are putting in a new tank, I recommend putting an access door in the rear floor, over the tank access hole. Troubleshooting sending unit issues or trying to get to the fuel lines is a PITA once the tank is installed. I also have an in-tank fuel pump, so the access helps a lot if there is a fuel delivery issue. Tanks Inc. sells a very nice stainless door, or you could reuse the floor piece you cut out.

You will also need to decide where to put the filler. The stock 70's fillers are in the right rear, beneath the tail light. I put mine on the right side, below and behind where the spare tire mount would be. This works well, but it will interfere if you wanted to widen the wheel wells to run larger tires.
